What cable I need to connect 2600 to 2500 router? 4

I have a lab that I'm doing some testing on with static routing. I have 3 2500's and 1 2600. I connected all my 2500's via dte/dce cables but I'm not sure how to connect my 2600 to my 2500. My 2600 has a fast ethernet connection. Can I plug a crossover cable from my 2600 into the transceiver port on my 2500? Or do I need a serial card to put in my 2600?

Yes!You can use the crossover cable to connect them.No need to buy a WIC-1T/2T.It will let you route the same.

Regular crossover---pin1 gets crossed with 3, and 2 with 6. A T1 is 1 with 3 and 4 with 5, I believe...

For future reference, if you're using Ethernet, then you use an Ethernet crossover. If you're using a serial T1, use a T1 crossover. They're very different technologies.

Did you ever get your 2600s and 2500 routers to exchange routing tables via serial link? Have a 2611 and 2620 and when I connect via serial a 2503 find that neither 2600 will update the routing table via the serial, while the 2503 happily updates it routing table via the serial. It doesn't seem to matter which routing protocol I use the 2600s won't update from the 2503. Seem to be an incompatibility issue between 2600/2500.

Glenn, there is no incompatibility between the two routers. Can you ping each router from the other router?

Thanks for the reply.

As you'll see from the details below, C2503 can ping its own Ethernet address, but not its own Serial address or the address of C2611 (when attached). Similarly, C2611 pings its own Ethernet address, but not its own Serial or C2503.

You'll also see that when I attach C2620/C2611 both can ping their Serial address and the remote address.

Note: I only have the one serial cable and the 2600 series routers only have one serial interface so can only attach two routers together.

Please post a show interface and a show run for your serial interfaces so we can have a look.

Also, as a bit of trivia related to this, when you ping a local serial interface on a Cisco router, the ICMP packet actually leaves the router, travels to the other side of the link, returns to the router (which replies), then travels to the far side and back again. So, if you ping a local interface, the packet actually makes four trips down the wire before you get a response.

Thanks for the trivia, which seems to confirm that there is an issue with the 2503 sending routing updates, i.e. nothing seems to pass down the wire.

Did see your posting, but have not found anything regarding frame relay issue and don't know anyone with CCO account.
Update issue is same regardless of whichever routing protocol issue used, i.e. RIP, IGRP, EGIRP.
 
So you did configure with RIP V1? The whole idea is to try a classful protocol, but I am surprised that OSPF didn't receive updates.
I would think it's a split-horizon issue on the 2500, so you won't get this with a link state protocol.
Just for kicks, have you tried "no ip split-horizon"? Also, are you at least able to reach 3.0 with a static route in place (ip route 192.168.23.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.2.2)?

Burt, as you'll see from details above I have config'd 'no ip split-horizon' on both routers (C2611/C2503) but this didn't appear to make any difference. Have not config'd OSPF as don't know how at this stage.

Config'd static route on C2611 to network 192.168.4.0 via serial, but C2503 interface 192.168.4.254 did not respond to any ping request. Did also config redistribute but this made no difference.

It looks to me like you have either a bad cable or a bad serial interface. Serial0/0 on your 2611 is not recording any incoming frames.
 
I can lab this up later---I have a 2503 and some 1720's, 2620's, 3640, etc.

Burt, have checked interface stats and can confirm that when connecting C2611/C2620 both report sending/receiving packets. However, when using C2503 and C2611/C2620 only the C2503 reports receiving. Would indicate cable fault, except cable works fine for C2611/C2620. Presume there is a difference in serial interface between C2500 and C2600?

There is no significant difference between the serial interfaces. If you're not getting any traffic at all on that one interface, that indicate to me that either that interface has a broken "receiver" or the opposite interface has a broken "sender".

What clock rate are you using?

Do you have the proper cables in order to try switching the DCE and DTE roles?
