What cable I need to connect 2600 to 2500 router? 4

I have a lab that I'm doing some testing on with static routing. I have 3 2500's and 1 2600. I connected all my 2500's via dte/dce cables but I'm not sure how to connect my 2600 to my 2500. My 2600 has a fast ethernet connection. Can I plug a crossover cable from my 2600 into the transceiver port on my 2500? Or do I need a serial card to put in my 2600?

jneiberger,

Do not suspect serial interfaces on C2611/C2620 as when connected together both report in-bound/out-bound traffic, i.e. both transmitters/receivers working. This is supported by the fact the C2503 will receive routing updates from either router, i.e. their transmitters working. This also indicates that the C2503 receivers, both Serial 0 and Serial 1, are working as it will update regardless of which serial interface is used. There is a possibilty that both serial interface transmitters on C2503 are broken, but I have no way of determining this.

Currently have clock rate set at 2000000, though have tried several different values. Normally have clock rate set on C2611 and connected to DCE end of a DCE/DTE cable (to allow back-to-back connection) as move the DTE end between C2620/C2503. Have config'd C2503 as DCE and set clock rate, but makes no difference.

Burt, hopefully hear from you later.
Glenn

Ok, forget routing updates or anything like that. That's making this more complicated than it needs to be. Dismantle the whole thing and then connect the 2503 to anything else. Configure nothing more than an IP address on each side and try to ping across the link. Does it work?

From what I read earlier, it sounds like it does not work. If that doesn't work, there are only a handful of possible causes:

1. Misconfigured IP addressing
2. Bad cable
3. Bad interface hardware

Trying doing something simpler. Do a simple back-to-back between the 2503 and another router. Can you ping from one to the other successfully?

jneiberger,

Have reset routers and created basic setup. As you'll see from details below not able to ping to/from the C2503 router. Tried with both serial interfaces on C2503. Same response/output when using C2611 rather than C2620.

When using C2611/C2620 (details not shown below) I am able to ping between the routers. Therefore can only assume that both transmitters on the C2503 are not functioning correctly, even though they both report packets as being sent out.

Burt,

Presume there is little to be gained from you configuring a C2600 and C2500 together, but if you do please post both routers config's just so I can satisfy myself I've not been doing something wron.

Thanks to you both for your help and patiences. All the best.

Your presumption is wrong---I have not had time...I just put my house on the market and am moving our office at the same time!

Take one of the interfaces in the 2503 down---remove the ip address---you can't have both interfaces in the same router in the same subnet---you'll cornfuse the pooor thang...

Burt

Burt,

Did take down serial interface on C2503 and as suspected it made no difference, either pinging from or to the device. Therefore believe this just confirms that there is a physical fault with the router.

Burt,

Thanks for the posting, much appreciated.

Can't see that I am doing anything wrong, and C2503 still doesn't reponding to ping either as sender or reciever, so it does look like the router is faulty. C'est la vie.

I've seen several 2500-series routers with that problem. I used to have one in my own home lab. It sucks that you got one that had that problem on both interfaces.
