I am looking for a nice neat way to say "re-taken up"

basically...I want to say that I have started doing something (hobby) that I did when I was a child

I want to avoid "I have again taken up playing...."

any ideas?

How about "resumed"?

I have resumed playing the guitar.

That sounds to sterile, like I have stopped, for 5 minutes and started again.

I think part of the trouble you're having is that saying, "I've taken up chess" denotes that you are a neophyte but enthusiastic to become proficient.

I agree that "resumed" fails to convey all of that.

But I don't see why you're opposed to using "again". Something like, "After a 20-year hiatus, I've once again taken up Tiddlywinks."

It may be a local thing, but I've often heard 'Started-back'

I'd build on what anotherhiggins has mentioned about timing; should you use 'resumed', 'recommenced' or similar, none of the words impart any sense of the intervening period, so you'd be wise to specify it.

returned?
recommenced?

I think I've forgotten this before.

I've started taking horseback riding lessons again.

They're only a quarter at the mall.
