Hey guys, quick question. We have been using the netgear 338 for quite awhile when setting up remote vpn phones. My question is, what vpn router does anyone know that actually works and is inexpensive.

Cisco 800 series works for me. <-- Routers

Cisco ASA 5505 works great too <-- Firewall

Don't go any cheaper or it will cost you more in callouts/engineering time trying to make it work when it goes wrong :)

not always, take the netgear 338, it is less expensive, and we have had no issues using it at all.

But you have asked for something cheaper, I took that to mean cheaper than you already using...so don't go any cheaper than the Netgear :)

its shit like this that gives the product and industry a bad name...

Customer - "Oh voip is so crap - Oh I hate it"

BP - "Oh Mr customer what did you last BP put in for a firewall?"

Customer - "I think its that netgear there. Im always having to reboot it"

Oh I see.

Just dont scrimp on infrastructure. If the customer doesnt want to pay, then walk away.

The 336Gv2 are good.
If you use the 336Gv1 then you will have issues.
The 338 is almost the same as the 336Gv1.

The V2 ar emust more stable.

Okay, you obviously don't like netgear, but in all honesty, none of our customers have had any issues with the 338 and setting up remote phones. None are having to reboot the router.

These are being set up for small businesses that are just wanting the ability to have a remote phone or two.

And also, if what we are doing and the products we use are giving the industry a bad name, I really doubt we would still be in business after 43 years, and still have a retention rate of customers over 90%

I asked for inexpensive, not cheaper then the 338. the 338 is and has been end of life for awhile now, and it is getting harder and harder to find them new.

We are using these for our smaller end customers, that are not spending money for securing their network, it is only for the purpose of setting up remote phones.

Use the 336Gv2.
This is the replacemend for both the 336Gv1 and the 338.

tlpeter, we have already looked into the 336v2, which is what we will probably go with for these customers, but was just seeing if there was any other good alternatives that others have used and liked.

Cisco 800's

They work too and have a better reputation.

its not about securing a customers network, its about making sure it works and keeps working. Infact most of the time on the 877 we dont even configure a firewall, but we know, its just a set and forget senario.

customer = happy. we get paid.

we have done the same thing with the netgear338, just set it and forget it, no problems or issues.

fair enuff.... just stick with what you know and works.

But as Andy said, it appeared you were looking for something even cheaper than what you had.....
