Hi all,

We just upgraded our in-house IP Office from 8.1 to release 9.0.100.845 last night. Now our 5621 VPN phones do not work. I checked the firmware of the VPN software on the phone, matches the firmware for 9.0. Confirmed Power User with Remote Worker enabled. The license VPN IP Extensions is now Obsolete. The Allow Remote Extn in the VoIP tab is no longer there.

When I run a SysMon, I get an H323 Event stating "VPN Phones not allowed".

Any suggestions?

You selected remote worker and you should not do that as the VPN phone is a normal phone.
Remove the remote worker option and try again.

Hi tlpeter,

I did see this in another post on here and tried disabling "Enable Remote Worker" on my user tab, still no luck.

Something with legacy VPN phones changed between 8.1 and 9.0. First, my VPN phone worked on 8.1, secondly, the licenses are now obsolete. Also, in the knowledgebase, Avaya reference's the "Allow Remote Extn" on the VoIP tab in Extensions. When I go to Extensions / VoIP, "Allow Remote Extn" is gone, and if I click Help, this feature is no longer referenced.

I went through a lot of documentation yesterday looking for the change to these legacy VPN phones and am having no luck. I think this will be a "feature enhancement" we dont know about yet.

You need to disable it on the user, nto on the phone.
The VPN phone licenses where not there on 8.1 either!

I wrote... tried disabling "Enable Remote Worker" on my user tab. Did I miss something, or did you?

The licenses were obsolete with 8.1, but the VPN phone worked.

Try to delete those obsolete licenses

Thank you for that suggestion, it did not work though. I also deleted the Extension and User, rebooted, and recreated.

SysMon showing "VPN phones not allowed" is what really concerns me. What would make IPO respond with that?

Read the IP Phone Installation Guide from page 58.
PS, trying to find that document on Avaya.support.com takes just as long as solving the above problem.
I suppose you have better luck on the knowledgebase but I have no access right now ( disabled my account with a wrong password ( new PC ))

The help file for System -> Lan1/2 -> VoIP has the following under the H323 Remote Extn Enable section

- Currently, only 9600 Series phones are supported as H.323 remote extensions.

JSurfer, a VPN phone is not the same thing as a H323 Remote extn and not effected by those restrictions :)

I did find the IP Phone Installaion Guide 9.0 on Page 58 and 59 are for VPN installation instructions, been through all of this documentation, and the links provided on those pages.

Curious, on page 59, of this 9.0 document, it states:
2.Click on Extension and select the entry for the IP extension.
3.Select the VoIP tab.
4.Enable VPN Phone Allowed.

This Enable VPN Phone Allowed is not there on my system.

Thank you everyone, but this is most likely an Avaya issue and I am trying to get a case opened through our distributor.

Did you have remote extension enabled on this phone prior the upgrade?
Is the lan, used for the VPN phones, also used for remote workers?
Something must be blocking this as it should work.
8.1 had the remote worker option on the extension but they removed it and only use the user for that now.
Perhaps the extension still has the remote worker option enabled on it although i doubt that as you also deleted the extension.

Hi tlpeter,

I just looked back at an 8.1 config, with Manager 8.1 and Remote Worked was enabled on my extension. The LAN is used for both VPN and remote workers (ie: Softphone users). What are your thoughts?

Been there, done that

Try importing the config with 8.1 Manager, untick that setting and put it back in the system :)

That is my thought too.
But after deleting the extension and recreating it this should not matter.
Try a totally different extension.

Was this ever resolved? I'm having the same problem with a brand new 9.0 installation. I have been able to get "Remote Workers" to work, but cannot connect with VPN Phones.

ncarter2,

I have not revisited, I downgraded to 8.1 to get my VPN phones working. Sorry I couldn't help.
