VPN Folder Sharing

Hello, I am new.

My layout:

A Server running Windows 2000 Advanced Server Edition
A Client running Windows XP SP2.
A LAN used for testing the VPN.
A Modem-to-Server connection for testing Remote Access.

My success:

When running locally, I can create a VPN link to the server with my client computer through the LAN, using the IP address assigned by the router. I can also create a "Network Place" using the information about the shared folder that is located on the server. I can access these files with full privelages.
I can also access the "Network Place" without connecting the VPN. (I assume this is because I am still connected through the LAN.)

My failure:

When running the server directly to the Cable Modem (without the use of a router) and trying to connect to the shared folder remotely, it says that the folder can not be found; however, I can connect to the server via the VPN (I can verify the logon from both the Server and the Client.)

My question:

How can I get the VPN to share the selected folder over the VPN? Is there a simple setting I am missing? I know it can be shared (because of the LAN tests), and I know that the VPN is connecting. How can I fix this?

(P.S. the client computer still connects through a router. Could the router be blocking the "ping"?)

I have enabled rerouting through the router so that I can test the remote connection locally (connecting to the outside IP).

I can connect, but can not get the password verified. Does this help?

I am still getting a 721 error during the password verification. Am I missing something? I have 1723 and 47 open on the router, and I have all firewalls disabled.

From the client machine can you ping the external IP of the server????

And in the Routing and Remote Access you hav got the server configured to allow remote access via the cable modem?!?!?

Actually, I had been assuming all was good with the LinkSys router since it was brand new....BUT....the FirmWare needed updating. Now, all works. It's just a matter of getting other computers to log in. I'll be testing these tomorrow.

I can't believe how easy a fix that was with all the work and thinking I've been putting into it.

TIP TO OTHERS: ALWAYS check to make sure your FirmWare is up to date. AND as far as folder sharing goes...there are 3 places to set up permissions. I'll write them down and post them here on Friday.

Hi inveni0,

Need help sharing folders.....

I've been trying to setup vpn for quite awhile now, using different senerio's, All have been a failure!

I have now successfully setup a vpn connection using WinXP.
Here is the network layout...

Server Side:
Cable Modem
Linksys Wireless Router - port forwarding for ports 1723 for PPTP and 500 for IPSEC
Windows XP Pro - running built in vpn software

Client Side:
Cable Modem
Linksys Router
Windows XP Pro - running built in vpn software

Both routers have PPTP & IPSEC Enabled.

I click the connection icon, and I connect.
I confirmed this on the server side also, It shows me being connected.

Now the problem....
How do I share the folders I want access to?

I thought they'd appear in My Network Places...

What do I have to do on the server side to gain access to My Network Places on the server? What security settings do I need so that users can read/write to the file.

Thanks,
Carl

P.S.
I'm also interested in knowing how to test the setup on my lan, before I bring it back to work.

I setup this machine up generically just to see if I could connect. As I mentioned I had so many failed attempts before with Win 98 and 2000.

Basically, I installed WinXP, then went on to setting up the VPN server settings. So really I'm looking for this PC to be a midway point. Connection only, then go through the network to my shared files.

Is this possible?

I want to share an excel file, in multi-user mode.
Do you know of any issues I may run into?

Thanks Again....
