My Win95 machine crashed saying that the file, VMM32.VXD was needed to start Windows. I had not installed, uninstalled or overwritten any files. I replaced the file with another copy (from another PC). The PC goes through Startup but just as it is about to load the desktop, it shows the 'It is now safe to turn your computer' screen. Any ideas why this would happen?

First off, the vmm32.vxd file is built during an install...so copying it from another machine probably won't work and extracting it from the CAB files will definitely not work.

What you can try first is to boot to Dos mode, go to Windows\System\Vmm32 and move or rename all the files located there EXCEPT VMM.VXD and try and boot.

Another alternative is to rename the vmm32.vxd file and re-run setup for Windows 95 so a new version is built.
