Hello all,

So, I always leave the serial connected to my VM Pro, just in case something tanks out and I'm not in the office and I need to fix it remotely. Well, the other day I disconnected the serial cable, and VM Pro stopped working. I had to plug the cable back in, then reboot the VM Pro server for it to start working. Any idea what the problem is? I do notice that a monitoring window comes up call vmprov5svc every time I log in.

Any thoughts?

are you talking about having it plugged into the DTE port of the IPO?

Please dont be offended here. But do you have a serial type dongle for licencing?

Your not removing that with your DTE cable are you?

Yes, I do mean the DTE port.

The Dongle is USB, and plugged into the VMPro system. Things stop working immediately when I break the DTE/Serial connection.

Thanks for helping!

Is the IPO and the VM PRo connected to the same LAN subnet??? I don't see how VM woulr work if not.

When you unplug the serial lead, do the licenses still show as valid???

So you probably have two different dongles ?
Then the system does not know where to look at ?
Did you purchace new licenses latelty and came it with the serial dongle ?

Please define not working...

Silence or busy when you dial voicemail?

I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone.
My wish has come true. I no longer know how to use my telephone.

Have you tried to unplug the cable, then reboot the system without the cable?

It works! Now if only I could remember what I did...

Not working => silence when calling VM.

Yes, I have tried rebooting without the DTE cable connected, but it didn't work. I have to connect the DTE, then reboot the VM Pro.

I only have one dongle. I haven't checked to see if the licenses get dropped.

This did work previously, and both the IPO and VMPro are on the same subnet.

Thanks for helping everyone.

Daniel

1) Vm pro does not use the serial port so the serial cable is NOT your problem

2) silence = invalid licence, you either have no feature key installed or your IPO is looking in the wrong location. (Restaring VM will work for 2 hours)

The RS232 feature key is supposed to connect to the back of the IPO, I suspect you have it connetced to the PC & then a cable from the key to the DTE port. move the key directly to the IPO.

Are you sure the dongle is usb and not a serial one connected to a USB serial port. and then follow as above from IPGuru

There is definitely only a USB dongle, no serial dongle. It used to work without any DTE connection, but I can't nail down the exact time the change took place :(.

Rebooting the VMPro system doesn't fix the problem, even for the short period of 2 hours. I will disconnect the DTE tonight and see what the status of the licenses are afterwards.

Thanks again.

license status will show as soon as the IPO is rebooted.

Unplug the DTE, reboot the IPO then the VM Server

I do not think there is a license problem, maybe there is a license issue also but something else is wrong with the PC. Because I always get busytone when without license and you get silence and also you have the same issue after rebooting VM Pro service (unlicensed for 2 h).

Install VM on another PC, but do not forget the setting in Manager "Voicemail IP address".

Make sure the keyserver is operating correctly. Some times the driver for it can get wacky. Is the keyserver lit red in the toolbar and can you click on it and see the dongle number? Try moving the dongle to another usb port. Make sure pc is going into hybernation, turn off power savings mode on nic. Make sure hard drive is set to always run.

I was able to get it working without the DTE connection.

I disconnected the DTE, and shut down both VMPro and IPO. I then started up VMPro. When it was running I started up IPO. I then have to restart the VMPro service before it will start working. Every time I reboot the VMPro I have to restart that service.

The VMPro system is a few years old and a tower, it doesn't look too good sitting next to my nice rack. I'm going to migrate it over to new hardware next week, I'm guessing that will fix up the issue.

Thanks for all the input and help everyone!!

Daniel

We had problems with VMPro on an old tower server as well. Old machine and every so often VMPro would just stop working, I migrated to a new more robust server and haven't had any problems since.

So hardware may be your problem.
