Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated…

I have a location that presently has two phone systems: a Nortel Meridian and a Definity S8500. The Definity has one MAS 2.0 and one MSS 2.0. The Nortel is using Meridian Mail. These two systems are connected via Q-sig T1. The switchboard for this facility is on the Nortel system.

Here is my problem: Periodically, the operator will transfer a call to an Avaya user and when that person is away from their desk, the caller hears a fax tone. No greeting or anything else—after 6 rings, a fax tone picks up. I do not know if this is every Avaya user; I have only heard complaints about 3 people (I am one of them…). Has anyone experienced or heard of a mailbox covering to a fax tone?

Thanks,

Joe

Never have are you sure that the MM is giving the fax tone?

I would run port monitor and OHV Operational History Viewer to isolate if the MAS is giving FAX tone.

I will give that a shot, thanks. I will post the results.

When Object Event Type Call-Id Message Application Server Information Port Mailbox Directory Search Key
05/23/07 14:49:00 3996053387 21216 Information 22549 MASXXXX Caller has requested to leave a message for mailbox 54202 after a busy condition. 14 54202
05/23/07 14:49:00 TUI 21340 Information 22549 MASXXXX Greeting playback was interrupted by a faxtone 14 54202

That tells me the MM heard fax tone from the inbound call

So it is associating the Nortel console with a fax?

Not sure but the " Greeting playback was interrupted by a faxtone " means that the MM heard faxtone from the calling party I don't know what could be emulating a faxtone from the console but if you have the console transfer a call to you do you hear anthing out of the norm?

No, the call completes and sounds normal. Apparently, I have just found out that this happens to all MM users as well.

It is beginning to sound to me like a QSIG problem between the 2 systems on a transfer. Almost like when the console rels the call the QSIG link sends something to make the QSIG on the Avaya side think it has an incoming fax.

What happens if the console does not rel the call until the MM picks up?

Same thing, fax tone. And I think you are on to something with the QSIG...

I agree with Ken...I am very suspicious that something in QSIG may be the culprit. Just make sure that the CORRECT Config Note (CN) has been used and has been adhered to (at least as much as reasonably possible) - by this I mean go over every statement in the CN and ensure it is prgmd that way in the MM, AND, in the PBX. If the prgming is different than the CN, try using the CN parameters as a test. It may even be an issue with QSIG between the Nortel and Avaya switches involving a console, even outside of the MM.
How long has this been an issue? Try using a different cover path (not MM) say to a cell phone (EC500 if available) or some off premise destination. Then see if that cover point hears fax tone.
Just a thought or 2...
