Hello people

I'm a Visual Foxpro novice using 5.0, 6.0. I would like to know of any Freeware, Shareware or Third Party debugging tools that will ease my entry into the language.

I am a Foxpro Dos programmer that now needs to get up to speed in VFP.

Thanks for your help

First, have you tried the debugger that comes with VFP 5/6/7? It's a substantial improvement over FPx2x's capabilities. Also, I believe, if the first thing you need is a debugger, then you need to get some basic training in VFP. There are a number of threads here that have recommended MS, and third-party tutorials, books, magazines, conferences and courses (on-line, video tape, self-learning and with live instructors).
When you have specific questions, I sure many of them can be answered here (or already have been) or on the other peer-to-peer support groups.

Thanks Rick

No I havn't I will be installing 5.0 this weekend and working with an application written in 5.0. I at one time was playing with VFP3.0 when it first came out and found it very difficult to work with and was not particually excited about facing that task again.

However at that time I didn't need to migrate to VFP so I never got pass the initial brief scan. Now I don't have the choice and am trying to find some good books on the subject but unfortunately I have discovered the Bookstores are not stocking VFP books beyond the token copy. I hate to layout $50,$60,$70+ dollars for any book without sitting down and going thru it for a coupla hours.

Perhaps you could reccomend a few of your favorites

Thanks for your timely input

There are some tutorials avavilable at
The best VFP books are available at - "Fundamentals: Building Visual Studio Applications on a VFP Foundation" is a
good one to start with. They offer free downloads of sample chapters on most (all?) of the books, and all include a CHM and/or PDF version of the book that you can "immediately" download after payment.

You may also want to check out some free training at You have to register, but it's free unless you want the book too.

If you have a training budget, consider MicroEndeavors ( - they have both classes and self-study courses. There are others offering training, it's just I know these are good - I've paid for both.

Other training options are:
TakeNote - KeyStone Learning - (VFP -
)
AppDev - (VFP -
)

There are also the UT ( Tek-Tips
( <g>, and the Wiki ( and the good "old" newsgroups on the news servers - all good resources for peer "group" based help.

Rick,

Thanks for that input, I'll be researching it this afternoon
