I tried to slipstream an XP Pro cd for installation on this SATA laptop, with the RAID/SATA drivers from Intel (945GM chipset)---the damn thing still does not recognize the friggin hdd...HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!! I HATE VISTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Might need to download chipset driver for that laptop. Sometimes sound is considered part of the chipset. In the BIOS you might also have to turn on the sound. I could see that on some laptops it might be turned off by default.
Did you install the chipset drivers?
Typically this is done after installing the OS. Never messed with a Laptop.

"Okay---I've had it with Vista!!! Can anyone out there help me with reloading XP on this stupid thing? Can I really use an external floppy drive to load SATA drivers with the F6 option at the initial XP installation screen? Someone, PLEASE HELP!!!!! I will read all that is necesary, but I Google it and it leads me to nowhere! I have a Gateway MT6821."
But, the sound chip is a SigmaTel---go look at what their website says! And I have also tried Intel and Gateway. But, I finally found a driver that works...I guess if one Google's enough, they'll find that which they seek.
about reloading XP, read what wahnula mentioned earlier and check the links he provided... or slipstream the SATA drivers using nLite...
I got lucky with my lappy, it too has SATA HDD, but it is handled by the BIOS as an IDE drive, thus XP recognizes it as a regular drive and I do not need to slipstream nor do I need to use an USB Floppy...
Thanks Ben, but like I said, I got everything working. I stole the sound driver off the Gateway FTP site by geting another one and sniffing the IP with Ethereal---then I went there myself and found one for a different lappy that works.
I agree---I have learned my lesson this time around...was thinking of taking the advice in the quote at the end of your name...
"If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer..."
So Burt, I take it that you now have Windows XP successfully loaded on this laptop? I'm curious, because I actually bought the same model this past weekend and found a couple utilities that I use that won't run on Vista. Most of them work fine though, and the ones that don't run OK in a virtual machine. But I was first thinking of going to XP on the laptop but stopped looking when I saw that they didn't have any XP drivers listed.
hi burtbees
i also have purchased the MT6821 and i want to install xp too, obviously i have the same problem as u had so i would appreciate alot if you could help me install xp (specific steps plz) also if you have the links of the xp drivers would help alot too... i have read that its quite difficult to find them specially the sound driver, thanks for the time...
I apologize---do you guys still need help? I spend 99% of my time in the Cisco routers forum...sorry. I will read this again, if you guys still need help with this.
I was mostly curious about what steps you took and where you found the drivers for the MT6821. I have one and it's running Vista OK, but I saw that Gateway didn't have any drivers available for it other than for Vista.
