I have gotten this virus in a computer running XP SP2, these are the weird symptoms:

Pop Ups everywhere.

Norton antivirus will always start with "Auto-Protect" disabled.

In My Computer 3 (shared) of my 6 hard drives have a strange (but pretty) icon, it represents a computer with an open box to the left and a CD ROM in front.

Inside these 3 HD at their root there is a "Setup.exe" with the same identical pretty icon.

So far this is all I have noticed, I have ran Ewido which cleaned 5 objects but did not seem to fix anything.

I am not sure where to go from here

At this time, and without knowing what may be the problem or what Virus it may be...

I can only suggest to you to do an ONLINE Viral check, ie. ...

I would also suggest running a HiJackThis LOG and paste it here for analysis...

and in the Future, Please POST in the appropriate section...

Do you have a Message window title or description, or any pop-up details? Is there any helpful information from checking the Properties of these .exe files?

Removing adware & spyware

Get a free virus scanner like AVG:

free.grisoft.com

Update it and scan a complete test.

I would check for malware as well:

Webroot Spysweeper 14 Day Trial

Download it here:

Update the defs and do a sweep.

I would also check it with some other virus scanners just to make sure.

Sounds like a web site has done a drive by! Malware, it's very nasty. Got me once, I did a restore and things weren't working as they should, so I formated and rebuilt my laptop. It can be a pain, but the best protection is surf the web with a profile with "user only" rights. If you check out the MSFN forums, someone there created a great reg file that block known "bad" web sites.

Try booting into Safe-Mode and run virus scan from there.

You can go to McAfee.com and download their free tool called "Stinger" that does a pretty good job of cleaning your drives. I used it to get rid of some stuff on mine and it workes well! picked up some stuff that other programs didn't detect.

Thank you all.
After doing just about ALL of the above the good news is thar the popups are gone and the "Auto Protect" kicks in again automatically, but those icons in My Computer are still there

CORRECTION: THE "AUTO-PROTECT" STILL DOES NOT KICK IN AUTOMATICALLY AFTER REBOOTING

Erik, can you please read the post that started this thread...? thank you much

OK, I read it, but missed that part earlier. Try running a HJT and see if that turns up anything.

Here's an old tip your welcome to try. You may have to show Hidden and System files via Folder Options/ View.

"Delete the IconCache located in C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ USERNAME\LOCAL SETTINGS\APPLICATION DATA\IconCache.db (where USERNAME is your account name).

Once you have deleted that file start up TweakUI for win xp and choose to rebuild icons. Next time you start Win Xp the file you previously deleted is now rebuilt."

This program may help you.

Have a look around Folder Options/ File Types/ and see what is showing in there, and whether you can make any changes via that?

O23 - Service: Windows Log - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvcd.exe - trojan.
You may need to delete at boot with one or both of these files, there is something in the tools section of HjT that will do this.

Once you've done that and rebooted, could you post another log?

Hey Satrow, your sugestion apparently took care of part of the problem: now Norton starts with "Auto-Protect" enabled, thank you !!! but unfortunately the icons are still there.

To experiment I removed the "setup.exe" from one of my drives and now that drive is missing its icon all together, it just has a generic windows icon like when a shortcut is not associated with any program.
