Video Trouble

I have put my kids a computer togather and I went to hook up the monitor and it came on for about two seconds and kicked off.I got a new video card and tried again and it did the same thing.I tried a different monitor and the same thing happened.I concluded that it was he cable from the puter to the monitor so I got another one and it didn't help.Anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

Try the monitors on another system to make sure they are OK.

If they are OK:

Try plugging it into another receptacle in case the one you tried is bad.

What is the computer doing when the monitor(S) go off a few seconds later? Are the fans running? Is the power light still on? Is the hard drive light showing windows loading (is the light flashing)?

Have you installed any updates lately? Windows Update is notorious for downloading automatic updates for expansion cards that mess things up.

What are the specs of your system? Video card mfg? sound? cdrom(s)? hard drive and hard drive space? floppy drive? memory? etc.

Yes, it sounds like a problem with the system. The above post asks valid questions...

Also, does the computer give you a POST beep? This is the single beep you get shortly after turning on the computer, to let you know things are good.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Hey guys I appreciate the advice and things to look for.It will be a couple of days before I can get back to it but I will do what I can and fill everyone in later.Thanx for the resonse.

Don't forget to post the specs of the PC when you post back (as lgebhart requested). We need to know whether the video card is PCI or AGP, and whether the motherboard has onboard video. Giving the makes and models of each component will help tremendously.
