I tried to reset an IPoffice 403 unit that came in from a customer...via the DTE port..

Using my trusty manual, I connected via the Hyperterminal VT100 and did the AT-X and AT-X2 and AT-X3 commands as stated.. and then ATF to reboot..

Now all the lights are perminantly on, and the system will not re-boot...

PLEASE SOMEONE/ANYONE TELL ME IT IS RECOVERABLE...!!! I am in tears, as this is going to come out of my pocket!!!

Message I get now in the telnet session is.. on typing the ATF command:

Invalid software image, reason 0x0B
Multi-Sector Erase
OK

and then all lights remain, even after the plug is pulled and re-inserted it is stuck in this mode till it can reboot or get the software back....

arrrrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh !!

The AT-X command erases the firmware from the IPO!

The box will try to get a new bin-file from an TFTP-server, normally the Manager. Do the following.

1. Give your Manager PC a static adress in the 192.168.42.X range, your IPO now has 192.168.42.1.

2. Set your Manager to 255.255.255.255

3. Go to View/TFTP Log in Manager.

4. Connect the IPO to the PC and power it up.

5. You will now in the log see the IPO trying to get it's bin-file. Take a note of the IP-adress and MAC-adress.

6. Make a new Bootp entry, with the IP-adress and MAC-adress. Select the ip403.bin-file.
Note: If your IPO had a 1.X(XX) firmware, you have to select a 1.X(XX) bin-file. A can NOT use a 2.X(XX) file!

7. When the Bootp-entry is made, the IPO should pull it's bin-file and thereafter boot normally!

...assume you have Manager running locally and correctly setup to respond to the BOOTP request for new core software from the unit.

If Manager doesnt have a BOOTP entry for the system then watch the TFTP log for clues to the MAC address.

?What core software did it have before you wiped it, IP403 systems 2.0 and over also need an AT-X4 to fully wipe the config.

?Which manual details ATF, never encountered that one before.

Sizbut the manual was a training manual from Northamber during a course i attended.

The system was running 1.0(51). the password was unknown that's why I went via the DTE port.

What does AT-X1 do?

I have not connected the system to the network, and will try to connect the system to my PC in the morning via the network point changing my IP address to what you guys have stated.. Also installing version 1.3 on my laptop as currently it has 2.1!! yikes..

Fingers Crossed!

Big slap on the wrists to Northamber then, strange to have a process that wipes your core software when wiping the config was all that was required.

You'll need to ensure that your PC is running on a fixed network address.

I've never seen AT-X1 used so no idea if it has any effect on a system.

If you look in the FAQ's section of this forum you'll find an item of resetting systems by one of the forums all star MVP's.

From memory:

To deleta the cfg-file (configuration)
AT-X2
AT-X3
AT-X4 (when you have version 2.X and above, correct me if i'm wrong..)

To delete the firmware
AT-X

When upgrading to 2.X, remember to first upgrade the 403 to 1.99, which upgrades the boot-loader

or check out my FAQ 940-5354
it goes through the whole process in detal but just to confirm earlier posts

ONLY ISSUE AT-X WHEN ALL ELSE HAS FAILED

Guys thatnks for all your help.

AT-X has been used, but returns the same result each time..
>Invalid software image, reason 0x0B
>Multi-Sector Erase
>OK

And no longer comes out of it's all lights 'on mode'

Will be trying the IP address change and the software version set to 1.3.. but I do not see how it will make a difference.. doe the unit send anything /recieve over it's network point even when in this limp mode ??

Thanks again guys.. will advise my finding later in the evening.

You obviosly haven't tried the TFTP-server yet?!?

The box has no firmware at the moment! It's saying "Invalid software image", because it has none.

Try the suggested! Read IPGuru's FAQ, it tells it all.

Great... Will do, and thanks all for your fantastic help so far.. I am sure I will call on you again.

Thanks for the heads-up on my typo Nuggi this has now been corrected

The main problem here is that you don't seem to have the manager application open on your laptop - with the correct bin file pointing at the correct mac address in the BOOTP section (oh, and with the correct IP address).

Other than that - it's fine ;)

a) Set your PC to a fixed IP of 192.168.42.2 (mask 255.255.255.0)

b) Make sure you have 'manager' open

c) Make sure you have an entry like '00e007002e9e 192.168.42.1 ip403.bin' (the mac address - 00e007002e9e - will be slightly different for your unit - as each one is unique)

d) View the TFTP log in manager - and see if it say's it's sending

Hope that helps

cheers

Guys, I may be partially saved..

The unit came back to life.. and allowed me to proceed with an upgrade. IPGuru and all you other guys that advised me were spot on. Thanks

The Unit was Upgraded (via the DTE port) to version 1.3. Via Manager I then proceeded with caution in the correct manner to upgrade to version 1.99 and then continued to version 2.0.. But near completion of 2.0 a message popped up… 'FAILED'.

All lights flashed and continued to stay lit, and only upon closing the Manager application, did the system automatically re-boot. It came online and started to work fine with version 2.0 showing.

I then proceeded to upgrade to 2.1(24), and again, it seemed to have finished and then.. 'FAILED' .. all lights on and again upon closing the Manager App it re-booted, and started up ok - showing version 2.1(24).

What has happened here?? Are the Bin files missing something that the software upgrade is not providing it with.. Should I do a factory reset again to version 1.2 via the DTE port and build it up again??

The system is plugged into a BRI interface and allows incoming and out going calls and calls to be transferred between handsets.. basic functions seem to be fine.. should I test with vm lite and other apps to ensure or rollback and try again but with a lower than 1.3? don’t see how that would change anything though..

This is just an idea:

Have you used the AT-X4 command at any time?!?

If not, I would thry the following AT-commands, to get a clean box:

AT-X2
AT-X3
AT-X4
AT-X

Then i would remove the serial-cable and perform the rest via LAN.

Then use the Manager TFTP-server to send an 1.4 firmware. Then i would upgrade to 1.99, then 2.1(27)

That should give you a "good box" :)

Nuggi,

I will try it again..

I asked once before, what does AT-X1 do?? I did type it in at some piont and it did do the same as the rest .. erasing config... and carried on.

I'll advise my findings..

But why 1.4 other than the fact it is recommended.. is there a reason for the recomendation that some one knows about?

Anj

AT-X1: Have no idea! Don't use it :)

Why 1.4?? No particular reason.. You just need to use a 1.X software, because it's not sure you have the correct bootloader in the system.

Then 1.99 to update the bootloader, then 2.X.

I have seen the upgrade claim to fail on a few occasions with the unit then rebooting O.K. I suspect this is just a minor timing issue possibly agravated by network trafic.

if the Unit reboots O.K. then it has downloaded a working version of firmware & there is no need to panic.

Do Not use V2.1(24) it is crap!, get a copy of V2.1(27) & use that or you will be sorry.

an IP 403 unit only needs to be installed with V1.99 once after that you can go between V1.4 & V2.X without problem.

IPGuru..
you stated:
> an IP 403 unit only needs to be installed with V1.99 once after that you can go between V1.4 & V2.X without problem.

Stating the obvious.. even after you perform a AT-X4 command? I would assume not..

So only when 2.X has been installed you can roll back to a 1.4 and above (not below 1.4)..

I will get the 2.1{(27) on it ASAP.. (anywhere to find list of bugs in 2.1(24)

@IPGuru

The reason I adviced him to go to 1.x and then 1.99, was that it wasn't clear if his upgrade to 2.x had been totally succesful.

Better safe than sorry... So I thougt it would be good to install the 1.99 bootloader again.

@Quadnet

None of the AT-X commands erases the bootloader.
It's only 2.x and above versions that needs the new bootloader.

Have also sat there watching the screen and had the heart flutter when it says 1 or more units failed to upgrade, usually the main unit. only to see the unit pop into life a moment later. I usually reload again and default just to be sure.
