Hi,

I am having a mojor problem with my computer. I have w2k advaanced server on my machine. When I start my computer it takes alomost 10 minutes for it to boot. everything is very slow. Some of the applications like phtopshop wil not even open and I will get an error message. When I run the chkdsk I get these messages

File Record segment 4688 is unreadable
File Record segment 4689 is unreadable
File Record segment 4690 is unreadable
File Record segment 4691 is unreadable

In the event view log I get this error
Event: ID 7
Message: The device\harddisk0\DRO has a bad block.

Is there any way I can fix the problem, with out having to change the hard drive or reformat the hard drive.

Thanks

sound like you have a hard drive with bad sectors. I would suggest purchasing a new one now before it goes real bad that you may lost your data.

Sometimes I run Norton Disk Doctor and set it to automatically fix problems. It fixes hard drive integrity problems.

My system did what you are describing in the weeks or months before the primary hard drive crashed. I was lucky that Windows was eventually able to retreive the data on it. I suggest a new drive and an immediate data backup.

Your hard drive may not be Hitachi but it is a good idea to run the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test (download from HGST.com). This will give you a good idea of what is wrong with the bad sectors and if it produces a RMA code then you know the hard drive is needing replacement.

I think before you buy another a reformat would do your disk good.

As said above it seems you need a new one, but sometimes a poor hard drive can be rejuvenated just by formatting.

Hi I a new member but I just went through this two weeks ago and here is what I think is happening to your hard drive via Windows corrupt registry files. You may have found out that alot of the windows components like help files and other will not funtion properly. Windows print command doesn't work, etc...

All I did was to upgrade the XP PRO; and it made it "new" and extremely fast! I think over time; little bites are not written back correctly and become over the course of time to create the corruption.

When I Windows finally came back up; everything was set right and no lost of data or program functions were lost in the process.

Here the step by step procedure:

1. Get the Windows XP Pro install CD
2. Change the bios setup to boot the CD before the hard drive.
3. When it boots! Follow the menu and then choose upgrade option!
4. Put in your product key code.
5. You are on your way.
6. You may like me; have to call Microsoft for live bin series numbers entries; if the automated system does not work to clear you or validate your key code info.

I kind of got desperate; but you can also try the revcovery option and it may also work and then you don't have to fool with validation. I knew I would be validated. From a MCSE!

Good luck!

Thanks HarryWild, I actualy have w2k advanced server not XP pro. Do you happen to know what is "Recover Console", I booted my PC from "w2k advaced server" and picked the "repair option. Then it takes me to "Recover Console" option. It then asked my "What instalation of 2000 I want to log on to"

There I get lost I put "1" and hit enter. Then it asked for the password I enter my w2k password, but then it just comes to

c:>winnt prompt and stays there.

If anyone knows how recovery console works I will appreciate that.

Thanks

try this:
Open a cmd prompt (Start->Run->cmd and press enter). Once the cmd window is open, type the following:
fdisk c: /r You SHOULD get a message saying that your system can't exclusively lock the drive, do you want chkdsk to run at next bootup. Press Y. Reboot. Chkdsk should then run and should fix or lock out those bad blocks. You MAY lose some data, however. If the problem persists, I would think about buying a new drive and backup all your critical data.

Hola,

the recovery Console is DOS based, so you get no GUI (graphic user interface) at all...

Ben

PS - I offered no help, as most was already said beforehand by others... aswell as by yourself (buying a new drive and recover the Data from the old one...)

If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer...

I did not know it was 2000 Pro but the instructions I believe are pretty much the same. If you want the specific 2000 instructions then you have to go and find the 2000 forum in Microsoft and then do a search.

Here is the instructions for XP:

Harry

P.S. I would still consider having you perform an upgrade to the NT 2000! I know for sure that it would work!

What the hell; I will do the work for you! This is the way to do it!

***This is how to do the upgrade from Microsoft MCSE:

The Recovery Console I just do not think is what you want to do; that why I did not use it! No luck need for you it a sure thing!
