USB Jump Drive issue

I have 2 W2K SP4 Micron ClientPro 325's - both with the same problem.

When a jump drive is inserted, the system sees the new hardware, but does not find a driver for it. It shows up as "Unknown Device" and cannot be accessed. Here's what I've found...

In the registry (HKLM/system/currentcontrolset/enum) USBStor is missing. Here's the kicker, the device manager shows...

Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Enhanced Host Controller
Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C2
Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C4
Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C7
Unknown Device
USB 2.0 Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub

(Note - no USB Mass Storage device)

If I disable the Enhanced Host Controller, the system rescans and installs the jump drive correctly - USB Mass Storage Device appears and Unknown Device and USB 2.0 Root Hub go away. In the registry, USBStor is now present.

If I re-enable the Enhanced Host Controller, it rescans and I lose the jump drive and USBStor is gone from the registry.

I suspect a Micron supplied drive set, but I have updated about everything I can find for the motherboard - bios, chipset firmware, USB drivers, etc.

Anyone have any idea where I might look for a cure for this pesky problem?

Any takers?

By jump drive do you mean memory stick?

Have you tried the offending drive in another non-2k machine? (XP or Vista)

Do other USB drives work ok with these machines?

Is there a website for the drive - if so, any info, drivers (I know you are not supposed to need them for 2k, but...)

Are the drives being inserted into native port or a usb hub?

Yes, I'm talking about a memory stick or a USB flash drive. It seems the little devils have several names. Anyway, I have tried 2 different drives, a 4gig from DataTravler and 256mb freebie from Staples. Both drives work in another W2K SP4 machine (different vintage Micron) and in my main XP Pro machine. I'm using native ports (tried it in all 4 ports). I haven't tried another type of USB drive, but I have connected other USB devices such as a printer. But, I have a large USB hard drive on my XP. I'll try it on the W2K machine as soon as I get a chance.

I'm having this same problem on an IBM 6792 w\Win 2k. PNY Attache' 1G drive will read in other machines, but no flash drives load on this machine. PNY nor IBM/Lenovo have any drivers. I'm still fighting this one.

I finally got a chance to check this system with a USB hard drive and the problem exists with it, too. I used a Lacie USB drive. If I left the USB Enhanced Host Controller disabled, it worked. As soon as I enable it, the USB Mass Storage Device goes away and USB 2.0 Root Hub and Unknown Device show up and the drive is not recognized.

so it sounds like the enhanced controller for USB 2 support is knacked - or needs a driver you don't have.

Boy, I don't know. I've uninstalled USB 2.0, grabbed a new driver from W2K SP4 and reinstalled. Still no go. As for needing a driver I don't have, I haven't a clue as to what to look for. I did find what appears to be conflicting information on Intel's website about the motherboard. In one area it says it has 4 rear USB 2.0 ports and 2 front USB 2.0. In another area it says 2 rear USB ports and 2 front USB ports for a total of "24Mbps" - wouldn't that mean it was USB 1.1? My machine does have 2 rear and 2 front - not 4 rear. Assuming these are USB 1.1 ports, it might explain the problem. Somewhere around here I've got a USB 2.0 pci card. I'll have to try it to see what happens.
