Hi,

We have ENMS 10.4 and JDM 6.0.3. I need to upgrade 50 switch (5510) and i wish to do it with my gui tools.
Is it possible to do it? Has someone already do that ?

Regards

It can be done with JDM.

Put the files on a TFTP server. In JDM, click Edit, File System. Put the IP of the TFTP server in the LoadServerAddr field. Enter the diagnostics image filename in the FwFileName field. Click dnldFw in the Action field, then click Apply. The switch will retreive it's diagnostics image. After the switch reboots, go back into JDM, enter the software image filename in the ImageFileName field, click dnldImg, then click Apply. The software will download and reboot the switch.

You can also specify 'download firmware/software no reset' if you want to download the software, but not reboot at that point in time. That depends on the release of software the switch is currently running.

It sounds like he's trying to script/automated the process. I'm not sure if NMS can do it but I've heard the Enterprise Switch Manager (ESM) can supposedly do it.

If your into scripting you might also be able to put together a script to automate the process. It might not be worth the effort for just a single upgrade of 50 switches, but if you perform upgrades yearly it really pays off. An automated/scripted solution is also much faster than performing it manually and removes the possibility of human error.

Cheers!

Thanks for your answer.
Sure that if i can use script it will be better !
It seems that ESM can do it.
Can you explain a little bit when you speak about scripting to automate the process, what did you mean ? Is it using ESM or another way to do it?

Cheers

Here's an example of a Perl script that using SNMP and TFTP to upgrade large number of switches in an automated fashion.

You would need to adapt the script to your environment and if you are not familiar with Perl or programming in general you might have a significant learning curve.

The biggest problem is usually getting Perl installed alongside Net-SNMP but that's been made much easier with the different Linux distributions that are available today.

Good Luck!

Many thanks, it will be very usefull.

I'm just trying to use it with Windows, but it seems to be a pain, so i will certainly try it in a linux distribution.
