I'm attempting to uninstall Client Services for Netware (un-networked computed) to enable me to use the Welcome Screen and Fast User Switching however selecting the properties of my ISP in the Network Connection/Control Panel does not seem to do anything. No window or even message appears.

My ISP is AOL. Can anyone help please? [yinyang]

Don't understand - as you're not on a domain, there's nothing stopping you using Welcome screen & fast user switching (indeed, Welcome screen should be in use unless you've chosen otherwise). Have you left out details form your post?

btw, where do 'Client Services for Netware' come from on a non-networked XP PC. I say again, please give full details.

My PC is second hand the the previous owner must have had the PC networked. After 5 hours of surfing the only answers to uninstalling CSNW was to select uninstall from the properties of my LAN in Network Connections/Control Panel however when I attempted this, Properties do not appear and I can therefore not get to uninstalling CSNW.

Do you know of any other way of uninstalling CSNW?

I have eventually found CSNW on my harddrive and created a shortcut on my desktop however right clicking this does not give properties in the drop down menu.

When attempting to change log on/log off to Fast User Switching, a message appears telling me that CSNW has disabled this and to uninstall CSNW to allow it.

Any help would be appreciated. [yinyang]

Have a look around Group Policy and see if anything has been disabled in there. (GpEdit.msc from the Run Box).

Hi

I've looked around Group Policy and everything was "not configured". I went to "Administrative Templates" then to "Network" then to "Network Connections" and diabled and enabled setting for LAN option.

When I went to Network Connnections/Control Panel, LAN connections was then an option along with Dial-Up (AOL). I selected properties of LAN and unchecked the CSNW checkbox. I then restarted the computer as prompted and attempted to change to Fast User Switching however still received the message Uninstall CSNW.

I then went to Network Connections/Control Panel to select the properties of LAN and uninstall CSNW however it was not displayed this time yet I did not change anything in the Group Policy it was left with the same settings that enabled me to see LAN connections in the Control Panel.

I've attempted changing the various Enable/Disable options for LAN however I can not get the LAN connection to reappear.

Can you help?

Cheers. [yinyang]

Have you actually got a network card installed in the machine? If yes, try removing it, restarting (make sure it doesn't appear in device manager - remove it if it does), shutting down and reinstalling it. Does your LAN connection reappear?

Several ways for this to happen besides the routes you're going down...

Is pcanywhere installed on the machine by chance? If it hasn't been upgraded to the latest version it disables faster user switching this way.

Plenty of opportunities for other programs to have installed CSNW.

I don't think PCanywhere is installed. The only reason I am pursuing CSNW is because of the message displayed whilst attempting to change Fast User Switching.

If you check the above messages, I think CSNW is installed because of a previous Network connection.

As you will see I had managed to gain access to my LAN connection icon in Network Connections at which time I should have unistalled CSNW however I merely unchecked it.

If you could explain how to display LAN connection in Network Connections then I could uninstall CSNW.

Help...! [yinyang]

A long shot - try Netowrk & dial up connections, right click, properties. Services for Netware should appear in the protocol list, and you should be able to uninstall from there.

RobJustice,

Have you got a network card you could install in the machine (temporarily) - so Windows can recreate LAN connection (because, if there is no NIC, there can be no LAN connection...?)

PS. Have you tried a registry cleaner? (good one at - the Powertools contain a better registry cleaner than Regcleaner).
PPS. Repair reinstall might do the trick - though bit sledgehammer to crack a nut -

Here's a few links to try:

Uninstalling the Novell Client

XP will keep the drivers and bindings on devices that are not connected to your pc hidden in the device mangler...they are called phantom devices. This is how to see these phantom devices:

Device Manager Does Not Display Devices That Are Not Connected to the Windows XP-Based Computer

Good Luck

Thanks for the links but they require you to be able to right click LAN connection in Network Places.

Any more help would be appreciated. [yinyang]

Does anyone know how to show LAN connections in the Network Connections/Control Panel?

[yinyang]

did you do the one about Phantom Devices? Once you enable phantom devices, you open up Device manager, click view and click hidden devices...uder Network Adapters, hopefully, you can see the old NICs

Hi pdxphx

I enabled phantom devices and viewed "Network adapters" in "Device Manager". Under there was:

-Direct Parallel
-Realtek RTL8029(AS) PCI Ethernet Adapter - Packet Scheduler Miniport
-WAN Miniport (ATW)
-WAN Miniport (IP)
-WAN Miniport (IP) - Packet Scheduler Miniport
-WAN Miniport (IPX)
-WAN Miniport (L2TP)
-WAN Miniport (PPPOE)
-WAN Miniport (PPTP)

Not knowing much about Networking I have no idea what all this is and whether it has any relevance to unistalling CSNW.

Any ideas?

[yinyang]

Uninstall the "WAN MINIPORT (IPX)". The IPX protcol is part of the CSNW (Its a Netware Protcol). So try unistalling this or removing this from your network adapters. I would try uninstalling this first from your LAN Connection/Network Connection properties but if you are unable to get to those properties then remove this from Device Manager

Since you mentioned that you don't have a NIC, uninstall the Realtek adapter also

zoeythecat & pdxphx

I attempted to unistall both of your suggestions however received this message:

"Failed to uninstall the device. The device may be required to uninstall the computer."

any ideas?

[yinyang]

Try booting into Safe Mode, go into Device Manager, click on view hidden devices, and delete the Realtek and the IPX items under Network Adapters.
