We're running into an issue that involves sending email from anyone at one domain to another (domains/email changed for privacy in the sample). If anyone at ABC.com sends to XYZ.com, they get an Undeliverable return that looks like the one below:

To: abc@ABC.com
Subject: Mail System Error - Returned Mail

This Message was undeliverable due to the following reason:

The following destination addresses were unknown (please check the addresses and re-mail the message):

<xyz@XYZ.com>

Please reply to techsupport@XYZ.com
if you feel this message to be in error.

I've done quite a bit of searching online, and, while I find a lot of pages that have similar problems, no one has provided an obvious solution. Not even a place to start.

For the record:
1)neither domain uses a spam filter
2)XYZ.com is using Exchange
3)the email addresses they're sending to are confirmed as correct
4)both are using Microsoft Outlook

Appears to be some sort of DNS error, but I may be wrong.

Hope that's enough information. Thanks in advance...

Check the DNS settings in your server, you may need to allow dynamic updates and or add an MX record.

alternatively try sending all mail through another smtp server.

hope that works

Thanks, mundia22.

Forgive my lack of experience with these things (I don't do much with server setup, but I'm working on it), but do I need to allow dynamic updates on the server kicking back the emails or the one sending the emails? Same thing with adding an MX record: which server, or both?

For the record, mundia22's second suggestion of using a different SMTP server was the usable fix. We switched to using our webhost's SMTP server instead of our ISP's.
