Hi,

I have been having a nightmare with what should be a very simple task, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have two pc's running Windows XP with static IP's of 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 in a Workgroup connected via a small hub. They can see each other with no problems and share drives, printers etc.

I am trying to add a laptop to this configuration. The laptop's IP is 192.168.0.3, with the same subnet as the other pc's. When I add it to the network it cannot ping or be pinged by the other computers. It can however been seen by the other computers in My Network Places, though a permissions error pops up when trying to click on it.

There is nothing in Windows firewall settings on any computer that should prevent access and there are no other firewall devices. The laptop is a member of the same workgroup and there is no internet connection on this network. When the laptop is booting up it can for a brief period (about ten seconds) be pinged by the other computers on the network before something starts to prevent access.

This laptop works fine on two other networks, one running DHCP on a Domain and the other with static IP's on a workgroup. I have even tried installing a DHCP server on this little network. The laptop picks up an IP address but can still not be pinged.

I have asked many people and they have never come across a problem like this. It is starting to drive me insane. Please help me.......

There are a couple of things to check.
1)Check and make sure that Authenticate as a computer is checked.
2)Make sure that you have enabled sharing on the drive.
3)Sometimes XP makes a new connection for every time you connect to a new network, you may want to check the connection for the one your having problems with and make sure that client for microsoft networks is checked, and is TCP/IP
4)Check your WINS setting and make sure that Enable NetBios over TCP/IP is enabled.
5)The permissions is asscoiated with file sharing on the folder or drive itself. Do you have log in's for the other computers or for the Laptop? If so, anytime it would access it would ask for the log in, and also may want to change the folder setting from read only to archive, by un checking the read only for the property.
6)This one is a long shot, but should check the advanced tab on the TCP/IP for the TCP/IP filtering and select permit all.
7)If it is XP (The Lap Top) then try running the network sharing and security wizard again.

Cheers Julius1,

1) Checked
2) Sharing is enabled
3) Checked, Cheacked
4) Checked
5) Can't get that far
6) Checked
7) Tried

Still no luck.......But thanks for the suggestions.

I have a similar but reversed problem. My laptops can ping each other but neither shows up in the My Network Places!!

I can browse to them via \\ip address.
Can you?

Do all your laptops have a login name and password required when booted? Without one, one of my laptops was inaccessible.

Hi-
Make sure that the laptop has a password on the login name - and make sure that the same user and password is also setup on both the XP machines.

Thanks for the suggestions chaps..

I've tried them all and have still had no luck. I'm at a loss as to where I go from here....
