Hello,

I have a laptop and the internal one is not running XP any more. I want to format it but everytime i turn on the computer, it gives me an error saying it missing s file. Now, if I get an external harddrive (I think my BIOS can detect it since I have a optical mouse and it detects it), using another computer to put OS XP on the external harddrive and connected it to the laptop, will the laptop be able to run the OS from the external drive?

Thanks,

Chances are slim of that because the bios and hardware configuration will be all jacked up. But it just depends. Sometimes its possible

XP will not install on what it views as a removable drive.

go to another pc, put in a floppy disk, go to command prompt, type 'copy sys a:' then hit enter. also copy format and fdisk to the floppy. on the laptop make sure that it is set in the bios to boot from floppy first, put the floppy in the a: drive, boot and type 'format c:'. that will format the internal drive. after that either run the xp install or fdisk to set the active partition and partition the drive
