Hi, guys.

I'm running into an issue where it seems an extension has died on me. First I thought the phone had a physical failure, but that's not it. The set is not the problem.

Then I think, well maybe someone jostled a wire in a wiring closet somewhere. Sure enough, my continuity/polarity tester shows me there's no circuit back to the switch. So I put tone on the line and track it ll the way back to the switch. So the physical circuit is there, TN 4 1 5 1.

I take out my butt set and connect it at the very first punchdown and still get no dialtone (as I pretty much expected when the cabling was all still connected). The weird thing happens when I connect to the extension immediately preceding the dead one, TN 4 1 5 0. This extension is also dead. I'm thinking dead/dying card now, but then 4 1 5 2 has dialtone no problem.

Being the thorough guy I am, I ld 32 and check that all sets are happy (all showing idle) before I DISC and ENLU the card as a first kick it and see if it works step. They all think they're enabled. Took the card down and up there's no change in behavior.

I check the licensing, just to make sure we're not fighting over a last missing resource. There's not used that doesn't also have some left.

So now I'm thinking the issue may well be one of a disabled set. I am attacching the TNB of the broken set as well as the working set right next to it. This one has me stumped, so I'm hoping someone can see something I've missed or point me to where I should be looking.

Forgot to mention I diffed the TNBs and the only difference is the FBA/FBD Class of Service, so that's not it.

Have you checked the connections between the switch and the punchdown? I've experienced problems where when the amphenol connector on the switch gets wiggled a little bit, the lowest numbered TNs tend to drop. Since you're describing 00-02 this could actually be the case. The Option 11C cabinets are the worst for this if you don't fully screw the connector in and keep the retaining bar in place.

I've had cases where a FALC card has been hit by lightning and its taken out a number of ports on one card, but not all of them.

One way to check is to have BUG enabled on the TTY. Jack out the card, then jack it back in. If you get a number of BUG messages then it is the FALC card.

If it's working, then leave it alone!.

Just when you thought it couldn't get any curiouser:
I have now discovered that the ring connector from 4 1 5 0 and the tip from 4 1 5 1 complete the circuit for the extension assigned to 4 1 5 0. It is cabled correctly to the punchdown, this just started happening today, no physical or logical changes have happened in the phone room.

I am reseating the card now; hope this cures all that is wrong in the world.

Craziness.

I hate going to the vendor, but at this point I can't imagine it's anything but hardware failure. No BUG messages, no lightining strikes, and no loose amphenols, but thanks for giving me a few things to check on.

This forum is a godsend for someone picking up the Nortel with no formal training for the first time.

So, apparently, when I said no loose amphenols, I meant that having the retaining bar in place doesn't actually guarantee that the connectors are actually retained. the amphenol was just a bit loose, and after de-wiggling it the phones are magically alive again.

Thank you for your recommendations. They set me on the right path, and sorry it ook so long for me to reply.

Glad you got it all resolved. That retaining bar is kind of a false sense of security sometimes. It's always the simplest things that end up causing the strangest problems.
