Take me back to the 1980's when engineers really were engineers.
Computers were new, and you could still go down to
Maplins for a packet of discrete electronic components.
Assembly language was the thing
Ethernet? About 10 people the world knew what that was.
It was like the pioneering days of the old west.

Now, engineers have been reduced to simple 'black box' changers and any half-wit can become an engineer or programmer.

I suppose it's all in the name of progress, but for me the fun and personal job satisfaction has gone.

mutant,
Sorry to read that you suffer so.
No reason for your post to get flamed, indeed I very much enjoyed it.
Am in agreement with you in regard to these fora and yes, I have learnt from these forums, they are the best I have seen.
Wish you well.

Ted,

Here is another kind of weird but interesting forum. The bad part is that it is defunct as of March 31. They are trying to transfer everything to another site, but I'm not sure it will happen.

It originated as an economics forum on longwaves, but actually interwines some of the best and weirdest conversations that I have ever read. There is lots of BS not worth reading, but when you find a good one - your brain will be energized.

Keep your eyes on this forum to see if it gets migrated. They said that some other sites have picked up migrants from this forum, but I'm not sure it maintained the same flavor. This forum will disappear in September if no other site can be found to continue it.

Well, it is my weekend. Three days to turn the brain off.

Thanks for the link, interesting. Will read more next week, busy week-end coming.

if it helps any, i don't miss the 'good old days' :)

i'd like 'good new days' but will have to cope with the trash that comes with it, same as the trash that fell by the wayside in the old days.

just trying to keep the topic :)

PS. my previous post was trying to say i was degree trained without the certificate, i'm an oddity. If you want to do well get the full training, don't just sit at home and hack VB, then say you're a programmer.
PPS. I'm earning less than a lot of my peers on the course, but i work for a small companyin the 'north-west', and they work in the 'south-east' of england, where there is more money, having said that a lot of places still wouldn't employ me, and i was refused 2 jobs before this one.
PPPS. on topic flames are the good part of forums. off topic flames are the bad part. :)

I started in the mid-1970s, when we used punched cards and paper tape, and the big new thing was mini-computers, anyone remember them? Mainframes then had less power and memory than something you can put in your pocket today.

I don't regret the big technological changes, I do think some of the human attitudes have got worse.
