Hi all,

I have certain XP clients on my network that change their default location of "documents and settings\%username%\local settings\temp internet files" to "C:\WINDOWS\temp internet files".

This is annoying because standard domain users can't write to this directory.

Firstly, I would like to stop this from happening. If I can't do that, then I would like to have a script that will change it back that users can run, or that I can implement as a login script.

I wrote a script to change the value 'cache' in HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders", but this reverts back to WINDOWS\Temp when I open Internet Explorer.

Anyone?

Thanks for reading.

Anything in Group Policy?

Removes the General tab from the interface in the Internet Options dialog box.

If you enable this policy, users are unable to see and change settings for the home page, the cache, history, Web page appearance, and accessibility.

If you disable this policy or do not configure it, users can see and change these settings.

When you set this policy, you do not need to set the following Internet Explorer policies (located in \User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Internet Explorer\), because this policy removes the General tab from the interface:

"Disable changing home page settings"

"Disable changing Temporary Internet files settings"

"Disable changing history settings"

"Disable changing color settings"

"Disable changing link color settings"

"Disable changing font settings"

"Disable changing language settings"

"Disable changing accessibility settings"

I mean that the xp computers are changing the location automagically, not the actual users. Thanks anyway.

What addresses have you got in this location's, sub-keys?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Cache

Check that location on functioning machines as well as non-functioning ones, before being tempted to make any changes. Backup too.

Are the folders in C/Windows actually storing files or empty?

What happens if those folders in C:\WINDOWS\temp internet files are just deleted (Is it actually C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\temp internet files?).

Is there a problem with the Index.dat files in the correct location? This article should explain that a bit further.

Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files

From time to time I find the folders such as Cookies, History, and Temporary Internet Files, popping up mysteriously in the Windows Temp folder or Users Temp folder. I have never fathomed out why, I usually just delete them, but after a few weeks or so they pop up there again. There must be a reason but I have just dismissed it as a XP idiosyncrasy.
