I'm trying to recover some data from removable hard disks which I had on a PC running Syquest EZFlyer 230 - I haven't used the device for some years and then on a PC I no longer have - I tried installing the software & drivers to my current PC & it can't see the hardware at all - I only have one parallel port (used by my scanner) - Is there any way of hanging this device off a USB port with some sort of adapter cable?
Or any other ideas how I can get the data off this ancient piece of kit please?

homeric,

"I only have one parallel port (used by my scanner)"

Did you disconnect the scanner and try it with the one parallel port that you have?

Does the power pack still work for the drive?

Also, what OS are you running NOW and was the EZFlyer originally connected to a MAC or PC?

Hi Mainegeek Running Win98SE originally on PC now on PC (OS was the same on original 'working' installation) (don't have original Install Disks!) - yes I disconnected scanner and tried using the 1 parallel port - power pack appears OK

Hi Mainegeek
Tried the driver you suggested - still getting this message "Unable to find Syquest drive. Unable to use either ASPI or INT 13 to access" - Can't think what else to try!

homeric,
Maybe try going into the bios and change parallel port to SPP instead of ECP or EPP.

Hi Mainegeek
Tried setting to SPP - no change! - Looked at article (my brain hurts!)

Hi Mainegeek
Any thoughts on where I could get hold of a copy of some original install disks? - I've lost mine and I've been trying to use downloaded stuff which is possibly/probably incomplete - Thanks for your help thus far! [Ponder]

homeric,
I realize this may be a software issue as well. However, I would try the following first.

Go into bios and change parallel to ECP (device requires
IRQs to operate fast and efficiently)

Next, have a look at the config.sys & autoexec.bat to see if the EZFlyer installation has modified them as it should have. ie: SQLOAD EPATSYQ.SYS

If so, have a look in Device Manager at the LPT Port and see if it has an IRQ assigned and there is no conflicts.

For original installation disks, I would try a PC Shop they could possibly have a set. You never know.

Also, maybe a Computer Show or Ebay.

Hi Mainegeek - I'm feeling very very silly - the drive is kaput that's why it couldn't be seen by the PC - You told me to check that in one of your messages - It wasn't till I found an online manual that I realised the absence of a flickering yellow light meant the drive wasn't being read and the disk wasn't spinning up - I've located another one thru E-bay which I hope to get soon and I think that your earlier pieces of advice should then enable me to set it up properly - Thanks for all your help - You're a star!!!
Kind regards - Homeric [sadeyes]

Well I never! - I'm less of a dummy than I thought - My EZFlyer isn't bust - the newer one displays the same symptoms - Something is simply stopping the system from seeing the EZFlyer attached to the parallel port - Nothing else is using that port so no conflicts, but still it 'aint seen???

There is a bios setting where you can use ecp and epp at the same time, at least on some bios. You could try that.
Also, and im not saying you havent tried, but maybe try some more to get the drivers you need. Like you said, maybe you dont have the complete set of drivers you need.
The net and google are pretty good at finding drivers.

Just a thought, is there any other program or device you have installed that uses the parallel port? If so, perhaps you should disable it. And it could be that disabling isnt enough, you may even have to uninstall it. You mentioned your scanner, so just to make sure you could uninstall your scanner drivers and even programs that are specifically dependent on your scanner, then try installing your EZFlyer drivers and programs again and see what happens. Of course, you may have to fiddle with your bios parallel port settings again as well.

I've now installed a SIIG dual parallel port PCI I/O card
and I can now run my Iomega Zip drive from one of the new ports (defined as LPT2)- LPT1 has only my scanner attached & running OK (my printer is USB) - In the BIOS I've set up ECP/EPP, but still getting this message when I try to install the EZFlyer
"Unable to find Syquest drive. Unable to use either ASPI or INT 13 to access"
- the aim was to get scanner/zip/& ezflyer all working, now got first two, but EZFlyer refuses to be seen - Any more ideas please folks?

Tech Tips for Users of SparQ and Other Removable Storage Devices

Problem: "Unable to find SyQuest drive. Unable to use either an ASPI driver or INT13 to access the drive".

Solution: Go to Control Panel / System. Switch to Device Manager and open Disk Drives. Look for the SparQ. Mark it and click on Properties. Switch to Settings tab. Make sure there is a marker next to removable. Alternately, you could add Winaspi.dll to your windows\system directory.

I got that from here:
