Howdy,

Another dumb question about licenses on the SV9100. We plan on buying a 4 port copper card for 911 dialing in the event that our SIP trunks go down. I plan to send all 911 calls through the copper trunks, and the total amount of copper trunks will be 2. It will only be used for 911 dialing, and all other calls will route out their already working SIP trunks. If i only plan to use 2 ports / trunks, am I OK to only order 2 licenses? The site does not plan to update their trunks after that, and if they did, it would be SIP only.

Thank you

No. You have to have resource licenses to init the card. If you already have licenses avail you won't need them. Small enough systems come with 48 built in.

Fair enough. I don't quite know how to tell if I am good on licenses. I am a novice, but did fully install this PBX from scratch. Does this look like I have enough? I have no issues buying the 4 licenses, but just don't want to buy something I don't need.

You have 34 system ports, how many are you using now? just plug the card in and see what happens!

1012 VM Box 26...NOTE: you have only 26 voice mail boxes. A group box can be used if you run short of these licenses.
Also, the card takes up all of the licenses for the number of ports on the card. EX: a 4 port card uses 4 ports even if you only need/use 2 of them. It will not come on line if you have only 2 ports available for a 4 port card. The same is true for 8/16 ports cards.

Just as a side note..resource licenses are damn cheap. I'm not getting why this is even a real issue.....

CoralTech -- It's not a a major issue. We're going to buy the licenses needed, I'm just trying to understand the system and licenses a bit better. Typically, I buy a resource license for every card and port I purchase. However, I have found that due to our usage, we are generally over licensed. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, it seems the knowledge level of some of the dealers I've worked with is not the same. For example, 1 dealer told me 0 licenses are needed for a copper card. I've also been told that 10 licenses are OK to use on a CCTA card, if I plan on using a fractional T1 service. This differs from what I'm being told here, which says I need licenses for every port in order for the card to initialize. It's a bit confusing to navigate, as you can possibly see, but I'm trying to make the best decisions.

Belevedere -- we are not using any group VM boxes. We have 24 phones deployed and 5 SIP trunk licenses in use. We are licensed for 26 phones and 8 SIP trunks. To me, that sounds like a 4 port copper card would not work, so it'll be best to just buy 4 more licenses. No issue. I think I may just stick to licensing per card, as I don't want to run into an issue where I deploy a few more IP phones which would render the copper card offline. Or vice versa -- make the IP phones not work. It's just easier to keep track of 26 licenses meaning I can deploy 26 phones.

Regarding your statement about licensing a 4 port or 8/16 card and needing licenses for each port, regardless of use. Does this not apply to a CCTA / CCIS card? I recall a previous question that said I could license partially on this card if using a fractional service. Regardless, I still feel it'll just be eaiser to license for every port, as I have been.

Thank you guys

You can probably go with less licenses on a T-1/CCIS with fractional. I have found that when folks do that they almost always forget that a license is needed for the 'D' channel as well. I always license for the maximum required for the card. That way there is room to grow when needed, and you won't run into the...discontinued/not supported/need to upgrade issues. With a current SV9100 you shouldn't have that issue for a while.

Yup -- I'm just going to get 24 and just avoid it as it is not expensive anyways. Especially since the CCIS port license appears to be a resource license just like the copper, analog, and digital cards.

I was originally thinking of saving a few bucks, but it's better safe than sorry and will potentially save a later headache.
