Hi,

Just want to check if it is possible to run windows xp from an external usb drive? I have managed to get windows setup to install on the hard disk, but on boot up, it hangs at the XP logo startup screen. I can't seem to find any confirm answer to this...

If it is not possible, is there any workaround to this?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Russ

Does your BIOS support a boot from an external USB device?

Yup. It's a IBM Thinkpad T42 laptop. The bios is able to detect the usb hdd and boot up from it. The problem is the system hangs at the windows loading part.

once the Boot strap takes hold (NTLDR and BOOT.INI maybe others) WinXP expects the files to be on Drive C: (an internal HD)...

hope this helps a bit, as I don't know any work around other than using Linux or BartPE (Boot from a CD drive)...

Ben

If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer...
