i'am now facing a startup problem in my PC. i've a system running windows 98. i can't load my windows, whenever i startup as safe mode or safe MS-DOS prompt, it says that windows is bypassing the startup files. i've tried the troubleshooting section in the window in other PCs but i still cannot solved the problem. Pls help. Thanks.

since last boot up have you changed or installed anything
deleted many items
first thing that will come in mind would be some virus problem. try to reboot by using your AV rescue disk
do you have partitions set up by using partmagic
their rescue disks work well
do you have other OS on your machine if so do you utilze
boot magic, I was once in the same predicament and came back in window by first booting to the second OS and then back to win through boot magic
have you tried to go in pure DOS and perform a scandisk
and if no results tried a regrestore
BTW is tehre any message during what should be the booting sequence?

hold down the CTRL key before Windows 98 goes to boot, and this will bring up a boot menu. Select the Boot logging option and again a second time if it brings up the menu again. then reboot after it has failed to boot and hold the CTRL key down again to bring up the boot menu. Now choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only and then once at the C prompt type edit bootlog.txt
In there use the search tool to find the word "fail" it WILL always bring up some unimportant failures like "EBIOS" or "MRCI" or another one is something to do with Networks like "ndis2". Any way look for some other failures and most importanly go to the very bottom of the file and see what the last thing it tried to do was, this should point you in the right direction of what is preventing your PC from booting up.report it back here if you want.

OK, thks for UR attention. But i've already formatted the computer and reinstall Win 98 thinking that it can sovle the entire problem. But i've encountered problems during setup. Sometimes the computer hanges halfway thr' the installation, even it passes thr' the installatiion, it gives me a fatal error after restarting. Can you all suggest what's wrong in the setup procedure.

Suggest making virus rescue disks from a known clean machine, write-protecting them, and running them on your computer. Do a full scan. Just might have something nasty on that box.
