I just had a new harddrive installed on my eMachine computer with XP and WORD 2002. Whenever I open WORD or a work document I get a quick flash of a window which I can't read followed. sometimes, by an INSTALL window which disappears just as quickly.
When opening an existing document, the first window flashes after 6 seconds and the document appears 3 seconds latter.
When opening a new document, the first window flashes immediately, and the blank document after about 5 seconds.
After coming up, WORD works fine. Any ideas?

I don't know for sure, but I'd try running a repair install of Office/Word, if that's availabe on version 2002, I've had so little experience with that one, that I don't know whether it's the case or not. If not, I'd try uninstalling and reinstalling.

It sounds sort of like the install never fully completed or else some add-in/plug-in is unsuccessfully trying to be installed/updated.

If that doesn't work, try to make sure Word/Office is up to date (for that version).

Run the Office Diagnostics (Office Orb ->Word Options and select "Resources" and then select "Diagnose" next to "run Microsoft Office Diagnostics".

Hope this helps.

Good suggestions. I am leaning towards kjv and his wondering if there is some unfinished add-in installation. Are there any add-ins showing: Tools > Template and add-ins.

Are they any files in the Startup folder(s) - various places?

Thanks but there are no add-ins or plug-ins and WORD 2002 does not have an ORB. I can't find any reference to Resources or diagnostics.

I'm sorry, I missed that it was Word 2002. You need to use Help ->Detect and Repair...

Hope this helps.

Thanks all but I resolved the problem by un- and re- installing Office 2002 which I should have done first. I forgot I had the 2002 CD and thought I'd have to install Office 2007 which my wife loves but I hate. It takes the simple tasks from 2002 and adds a level of complexity.
