Hello, new with SQl and this was dropped on me today:

Event Viewer: Application
Error: 17803, Severity: 20, State: 14
Insufficient memory available.

I'm getting this error all up and down the event viewer. Its on a Win2000 server, SQL 2000 SP4. Phy Memory is 4 gig.

I've looked around in SQL EM and looked for the obvious, but was told nothing has changed in SQL sinc eit was working fine. There has been slowness and and some appications that also run on this server have been unreachable.

Our Email Archiver runs on it and its been acting up over the last week. Too much fighting over memory?

Like I said, new to SQL, so not sure about its managment, so any help would be great. (Also, i searched the forums and didn't see anything that was on line with this, but if there is one out there, please point me to it.)

Thanks.

Also, I have read on this forum that people say the first 2 gigs go to the OS, then whatever is left. True? Could the Email Archiver be sucking memory away from SQL, or vice versa. Just thinking....

If you run out of physical memory, then the operating system should start swapping physical memory to the hard drive. This, of course, slows things down, but you should NOT get an out of memory error.

I suggest you check the swap file configured in the operating system as well as checking the available hard drive space. If the OS tries to use a swap file that is 1 gigabyte, but there's only a megabyte left on the drive, you will get an error.

I'm not confident that either of these suggestions will resolve your problem, but they are quick and easy to check. It's where I would look first.

Thanks for your reply. Tons of space, 253 gigs.
