Some other free programs

General rule: ONE thread per problem...

1.) Sygate used to have a free FireWall product, I do not know if this is still the case...

2.) if you are looking for a FREE AntiVirus program that is pretty good, go to the AVIRA website: there download the PERSONAL CLASSIC...

3.) a good Free FIREWALL: or Kerio Personal: it will state that it costs and there is a 30 day free trial, but it works even after the trial (albeit not to its full potential... I am still using it today...)

Although no longer supported since it was bought out by Symantec, you can still download Sygate Personal Firewall 5.6 from places like Tucows (see
I've used it for years and found it to be very reliable and with very small impact on the system. I have noticed though that it doesn't work well on new, fast PC's e.g. Core Duo. I only now recommend it for PC's that are a year old or more.

I've now started using Comodo for new PC's and, so far, have been very pleased with it. An alternative is ZoneAlarm Free. ZoneAlarm don't make it easy to get the free version but you can get it from Make sure you avoid the 'TrialPay' buttons and, instead, select the link labeled 'I only want basic ZoneAlarm protection'.

As for antivirus... I've heard good reports about Avira but personally recommend AVG Free to my customers. I've found it to be small, fast and efficient.

Hope this helps...

I will try all these products.
I am sure microsoft has something for xp users.
Can someone give me the link for that.
Thanks

I am trying to install comodo.
It asks me if I have any third party firewall installed.
"Please uninstall before installining comodo."
I have spybot ,adaware and few other similar products.
I don't know what to do.
I am happy with these products .
I don't know why they want to make trouble like this.
None of the other products do this.
Thanks

Microsoft does have something for XP users. It's called the 'Windows Firewall' and it's already built-in to Windows XP. Unfotunately it's a bit rudimentary and only protects incoming connections, not outgoing... which is why most people choose a third-party software firewall.

Comodo is warning you that you need to turn off the built-in Windows firewall before installing the Comodo firewall (because having 2 software firewalls running is not a good idea).

The other programs you mentioned (Spybot and Ad-Aware) are not firewalls... which is why they don't warn you to turn 'any third party firewall' off.

Click on the 'Start' button, choose 'Help and Support' and you should see a 'Help' topic about how to turn the Windows Firewall on or off.

You may also find the 'Comodo Firewall Pro2.4 User Guide' useful (available from

Hi Rick
I installed comodo.
So far it looks like good firewall.
Thanks very much for your tips

The thing with comodo is that it is blocking things i would like it not to block.
For example I was downloading adobe pdf reader and i wasn't able to to a complete instalation of adobe because something was blocked and now I have adobe but I can't see pictures in the pdf files.
Thanks

hen insatalling comodo, select 'advanced user', you should then be presented with a choice as to which programs you should block, If unsure as a general rule if pop up appears when doing an install then allow the change.
