We are running G5s and G4s with OS 10.2 and 10.3. When we connect to our NT server using the SMB mount, our Freehand files (as well as other files) are showing up as unix executable files (which we can't do anything with). However, the SMB mount is extememly fast in searching and navigating directories.
We can connect to the server another way (which is extremely slow and doing a search or just trying to open large directories can take as long as 5 to 15 minutes) and access our files correctly. Any insight into what the differences might be between the two ways we can connect would be great. Time is an important issue and the new OSX is slowing productivity because we can't get to our files through the SMB Mount.
Any info would be helpful.
Thanks.

From what I understand...
If windows sees your files as Unix Executables, try changing the 'type' under properties of one of the files. It will also change the association with all of the like files under properties.

SMB/CIFS is part of the legacy protocal, Though NFS is a traditional protocol used to share files across Windows and UNIX environments, smb/cifs is significantly faster than nfs because it allows write ahead and has native support for locks.

You could also add an inexpensive NFS Server on the NT box for native NFS support.

This is due to resource forks and creator type info that Appletalk preserves. The problem is with SMB. You can solve half the problem by using file extensions, but you will still lose resource forks and links to images withing a freehand file. We tried to open up a trouble ticket with Macromedia but I believe they said freehand has problems with SMB and keeping that info. One solution we are testing is a product called ExtremeZIP...if anyone has any information concerning this product or any other solutions that will not involve Appletalk...any info would be greatly appreciated.
