On connection my download rate is very low, about 525 bytes and the upload rate is just as low. This, I find, is too low to download my e-mail and get online properly . I find that I need to reboot my system for everything to return to normal.Just lately it appears to be getting a lot worse.

My motherboard is, no laughing please :), a PC Chips M748LMRT with internal modem and 128Mb of SDRAM,if that matters.

Has anyone get any idea as to how I can get round this annoying problem?
they're could be several factors, course i'll need to know a few things
like what type of modem is it, is it a 56K, a 33.6K, ISA or PCI, you got the latest drivers installed?, have you checked with your ISP as far as your range away from the main server, have yuo tried other phone jacks in the house(sometimes a bad phone line can be a prob).
it all really depends. but it would help to know answers like these.
Karl
kb244@bellsouth.net
<a href=
Experienced in , or have messed with : VC++, Borland C++ Builder, VB-Dos, VB1 thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, Borland C++ 3(DOS), Borland C++ 4.5, HTML, ASP(somewhat), QBasic(hehe, yea it was 4.5 too, least i didnt start with COBOL)

Thanks for taking an interest in my little problem.
The answers to your many questions are:

1. 56K PCI internal modem - HSP56 MicroModem Supplied by PC Chips.

2. The installed driver is, to my knowledge, the current one. The company doesn't appear to have another one out at present.

3. I can log on with no problems once I reboot the system, so I don't think it has anything to do with the telephone line or my ISP. Anyway I can't move the computer to another location, we have no other telephone sockets;-(

I hope this will give some clue as to my problem.
Your TCP/IP settings by windows default is optimized for Networking using an Ethernet connection. NOT for dial-up.

I've sped up my modem connection by installing a product called PPP Boost. I've setup using it's recommended values and have a faster/more consistent speed.

Do not use this with Cable or ADSL modems because they connect through your Ethernet connection.

I also do remember reading an update advisory about KERNEL32.DLL problem. Can't remember exactly if it said your internet connection slows down or freezes the longer you're connected.

I will try and find links to both PPP Boost and KERNEL32.DLL.
Just how far out in the boonies are you? POTS line signals degrade in direct proportion to the distance from a telco switch. I'm about a mile from the switch and get great line speeds, close to 56k. A friend is about 6 miles further away and on a good day he connects at 22k.
Check the connections from the line coming from the pole up to where you plug in. Sometimes the simplest things are the cause. I have 28 pair cable prewired in my house and the telco man says all but 2 are useless, probably squirrels gnawed on them.

POTS was designed originally as an analogue system with a bandwidth of 3.4 KHz
How does a 56k modem achieve high data transfer down the phone line ?
Telstra has converted a lot of these lines to digital circuits. If you are a long way from the exchange you could have problems on an analogue line. I would ask the telecommunications company if your line is all analogue . Ask if you can be placed on a closer remote digital concentrator . This is a cabinet that is located remotely a long distance from the exchange and is connected via a digital link . The analogue phones then connect to this from shorter distances than they would to the exchange .

The BT exchange is less than a mile from the house but you never know it could be that:)
I have managed to get hold of a new modem driver which took 1.5 hours to download (3Mb in size). This has made a big difference.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to reply to my query.
the M748LMRT mobo is an all in one board and the modem comes with it unless you are using a modem card and have disabled the onboard modem. Have you tried reinstalling the modem driver? I think the CD ROM disk that has all the drivers may have more than one modem driver on it. Make sure from your documentation you are loading the correct driver. I have had very good luck with the PCChips on board modems so far, even on noisy end of the line country phone lines.

The only other drivers on the CD are for NT and Win 3.1. The latest driver from PC Chips site took over one and a half hours to downloaded, it is only 3Mb in size!
