I am making some cat6 cable using punchdown jacks. I used a tutorial on youtube and a punchdown tool to do it, but now on my cable tester the shield light doesn't light up. The instructions aren't clear on what to do in this case. Lights 1-8 light up in sequence on both ends. What does the shield light indicate?

Shield will come on IF you are running shielded cable, with jacks that support shielded cables and patch cords.

THe one I have is the 1594
which of course has no instructions link. For interpreting the results it has a chart of examples.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 SH None, Cable wired correctly
2 1 3 4 5 6 7 8 SH Conductors 1 & 2 reversed
1 2 & 3 2 & 345678 SH Conductors 2 & 3 are shorted
1 2 3 - 5 6 7 8 SH Conductor 4 is open or shorted
1 2 4 3 6 5 7 8 SH Pair 3/6 is transposed with pair 4/5
1 2 3 7 5 6 4 8 Conductors 4 & 7 are switched
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 - Conductor 8 is open or shorted

with the left being the remote lights and the right being cable fault. I get 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 - but the cable is shielded, and i got the shield light before with this same cable.

Looks like your shield is open. Try with a known good cable to make sure it's not the tester.

The answer is "42"

The "shield" light will only illiminate if the shield on the cable has continuity. Since Category 6 cable usually does not have a shield (aka "Unshielded" cable) your shield light should NOT illuminate. It's just that easy.
