In System information under Conflicts/sharing windows 2000 shows practically everything sharing irq 9 example:

System Information report written at: 01/27/2002 07:51:28
[Conflicts/Sharing]
Resource Device
IRQ 9 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System
IRQ 9 AOpen Video Station MX400-A - Win2000 Driver v6.49
IRQ 9 Creative Sound Blaster PCI128 (WDM)
IRQ 9 Conexant HCF PCI Modem
IRQ 9 Linksys LNE100TX(v5) Fast Ethernet Adapter
IRQ 9 Intel(R) 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2442
IRQ 9 Intel(R) 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2444

however I have set my cmos to non PnP OS reserved irq 9 for legacy and it has assigned different IRQ's to most of the above hardware although some are still sharing but they are sharing IRQ 5. What gives?

I'm a "non PnP Jumper everything I have control type of guy" (ah the good old days) and while I know PCI devices can share IRQ's it bugs me to have this many sharing 1 IRQ.

Why is Windows ignoring the BIOS?
I don't seem to have any problems but would I get better performance if the devices had thier own IRQ's?

With Winsdows 2000 you will not be able to control all IRQ assighnments. Windows will assign many devices to the same IRQ. As for performance ith this. You will not see an increase even IF you could manually assign all IRQs. You should have no issues with this configuration. James Collins

The very first device "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System" is the reason. According to Microsoft in order to be able to manually control resources you need to reinstall OS while BIOS has ACPI disabled. As far as getting better performance is concerned - technically, yes. Sharing an IRQ with devices like NIC and VGA card or Sound card is not advisable. I'm currently struggling with my ATI video card. During the video capture 50 seconds into the process my systems always locks up. When I went to check on IRQs sure enough almost all devices are sharing IRQ 11. ATI tech support strongly recommend to get a separate IRQ for video card and disk conttroller. I will see if I can have a separate installation done with ACPI disabled in BIOS. Then I just boot into that version to do video capture. ACPI generally seems to be the safest way to go. Microsoft warns that Windows 2000 will not adjust the resource settings if you made an incorrect choice. In non ACPI installations resource conflict can occur.

Hope this helps.

Flinx,
Like you, I prefer to have control over such things, too - but the simple facts are these:

PnP BIOS, plus PnP O/S = YOU MUST MAKE THE DECISION!

If you tell the BIOS, that your O/S is NOT PnP, then the BIOS will handle the "Hardware Tree".

If the BIOS handles it, you will have to ensure that Windows 2000 agrees with your decision! (It won't, in all cases).

Sharing IRQ's is not all that horrible - Windows 98, and Win2k provide IRQ "Holders" for PCI steering, which allows the PCI devices to busmaster as if on steriods. In fact, you'll notice that your printer port, even if it's setup for ECP, will not be using an IRQ by default! (You have to change that if you like HP printers!, yuk, yuk!)

My advice:

In the BIOS, let the O/S be PnP, but force the video card to take an IRQ, if your BIOS supports this. Also, set up your Printer Port to be ECP, with standard I/O, and DMA3, (we all know that DMA1 will get grabbed by the sound card!)

Don't RESERVE any other settings - let Windows handle the rest - it's not that big a deal! Windows 2000 manages this quite well - so go ahead, reinstall!

I am having the same problem. All my devices are on IRQ 9,
I need my firewire card on its own IRQ. What do I do?
please help, thanks.

As far as Windows 2000 managing itsself with multiple devices sharing one IRQ, I have to say it all depends on the product in question. I have an ATI RADEON, and it absolutely will NOT share with other components. It has capture features on it, and despises the fact that it must share IRQ 9 with a SBlive, NIC, 2 USB controllers, and WDM theater codecs. I have latest drivers from BOTH ATI and Creative, AND have flashed my BIOS, updated the chipset drivers, and still have no way of forcing an IRQ.

Everytime I play a game that plays MIDI, Direct Sound, and Direct 3d all at the same time, I get the Win2K blue screen of death with either IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL or the all too famous PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA...

I had Windows XP and it didn't impress me much. Its no more capable of being forgiving on IRQ sharing than NT was on using USB devices.

If Windows 98 could handle more than one processor and more than 300+ MB of RAM and didn't leak memory like a dog pissing in winter, I would probably still be using it. Unfortunately, my only alternative is to get rid of my high dollar legacy cards that I've been using for years and get their new replacements.

I have no desire to TRASH my SBLive plat or my Radeon vivo. Microsoft suggests the usual horse manure... Start over with a formatted hard drive and updated drivers. I have over 140GB of programs to reinstall, so that's easier said than done.

OK - copy of a post I made some time ago - it may help...

OK. This is not easy. I've had to do this because Microsoft think they know more about computers than anyone else and therefore decided not to let us play with our IRQ's ourselves. What you want to do is possible, but if you follow my advice, ** it's at your own risk** , this can go very badly wrong!!!

The problem is ACPI, ACPI controlls the sharing of your IRQs and will not let you change them, what you need to do is convince Win2K that your PC is NOT an ACPI compliant PC. To do this do the following;

(Detailed steps in case others need to do this)

START > SETTINGS > CONTROL PANEL> SYSTEM

Click on Hardware, then Device Mangler

Click the + beside Computer and under that should be Advanced Configuration......(ACPI) PC

Double Click on this;
Click on DRIVER Tab;
Click on Update Driver;
Click Next;
Check - DISPLAY LIST OF KNOWN DRIVERS......;
Check - Show All hardware....;
Select STANDARD PC, next, and when finished Reboot PC.

WARNING!!! - This will lose your hardware and when rebooted it will re-detect all your hardware, make sure you have all your drivers ready (I suggest copying them to the Hard Disk First!!!)

When you have rebooted (as many times as needed to get all hardware back) then you need to stop IRQ steering, this is done by;

START > SETTINGS > CONTROL PANEL> SYSTEM

Click on Hardware, then Device Mangler

Click the + beside Computer and under that should be STANDARD PC

Double Click on this, select the IRQ Steering Tab,
and you can either disable IRQ or (what I used) was Get IRQ table from Real Mode PCIBIOS 2.1 Call (get's IRQ based on BIOS and what slot the PCI card is in).

This may or may not let you change the IRQ's (depends on MoBo I think), but it will not put eveything on IRQ9 (or IRQ11 Sometimes), and will change IRQ's if you change the card order in your PCI slots.

So far my machine has been very happy about this (with all 5 PCI devices, AGP, USB, etc...) but it no longer shuts down automatically.

Hope this helps.

Any questions let me know.

Oh... and.... good luck - remember my warnings.
