I don't think it was poor communication as much as a battle to get shareholders on board. As the release date grew nearer there was a flurry of varying messages but finally they found some way (?) to smooth the feathers of Wall Street and go ahead with what was probably intended for at least several months if not longer.

The message to consumers is... the message they were giving to consumers the entire time. Things only got confusing when you tried to unravel the messages to their backers.

Something is still fishey here somewhere, but the "free and no subscription fees to consumers" seems real enough now.
