I'd like to set up a VPN connection to my employer's intranet. I have WME and a cable internet connection.

I can see where to add a "dial-up" connection, but how do I set up via cable?

No Dice. That resource doesn't cover ME. The instructions do not apply to ME.

Any other ideas?

Here is link to good example
If that doesn't help I have added this.

Make Sure your computer has VPN support installed

From the Start Menu, navigate to Settings and open the Control Panel.
Double click on ?Add/Remove Programs? to open that control panel item.
Select the Windows Setup Tab.
Highlight ?Communications?
Click the ?Details? button
Scroll to the bottom of the ?Components? list to verify that the item labeled ?Virtual Private Networking? is checked. If a check box doesn?t appear to the left, click in the empty box once so that the check appears. Your machine should install the VPN component automatically. It is possible that you may be asked for your Windows CD, if so, just follow the on-screen instructions.
Versions of Windows prior to Windows Me Second Edition didn't ship with VPN included as a default, but you should be able to download the upgrade for free from Microsoft's web site. If you don't see the 'Virtual Private Networking' option, search for the VPN Update for your operating system on Microsoft's web site: Be sure to download & install the update.
Click ?OK? and ?OK? to close the dialog boxes.

Setting Up a VPN Connection File

Launch Dialup Networking. In Windows ME, this should be found by using the Start Menu to navigate to Settings and opening Dialup Networking.
Double click on the ?Make New Connection? icon to launch the Make New Connection Wizard.
Under ?Type a name for the computer your are dialing?, enter
BC VPN or something similarly descriptive.
Under ?Select a Device? on the first screen, choose Microsoft VPN Adapter from the drop down.
Click the ?Next? button.
Under Host Name or IP address type in
your company address
Click Next. You will be prompted with a message stating that you successfully created a new dialup networking connection.
Click Finish

Using Your Connection

You should start your VPN connection using the steps below before launching your web browser, e-mail program, or any other Internet software. Your VPN connection also probably won?t work if you have any software-based personal firewalls installed on your computer (such as Zone Alarm or Norton Personal Firewall). If you have one of these products on your PC, will need to either consult the firm providing the software to see how to configure it to work with the BC VPN, or you?ll need to temporarily disable it for connections that require the VPN software.

Open the dialup networking folder (in Windows ME, this can be found by navigating to the Start menu, then Settings, then Dialup Networking.
Your dialup networking folder should now have a connection labeled with the name that you gave it above (probably company VPN). Double-click this icon. A ?Connect to? dialog box will launch.
Enter your company UserID and Password, then click the ?Connect? button. It is not recommended that you select the ?Save Password? button.

You will then see various messages stating that you?re logging onto the company network. The connection should take about 30 seconds. The dialog box will disappear when the connection is established & the VPN Connection icon will appear in your Windows System Tray in the lower right-hand corner of your PC. This icon looks like two PCs, one overlapping the other.

To disconnect your VPN session, simply double-click the VPN Connection icon in your system tray & click the ?Disconnect? button on the dialog box that appears. Note: if you disabled a personal firewall, you will want to re-start it immediately after disconnecting from the VPN.

Good luck!!

Sorry Breeze1....My error

Thanks Mr. Fixit...

Go to dialup networking, add a connection, next screen has a drop-down, one of which should be a Microsoft VPN adapter. Select that and fill in the blanks (server address, password, connection security, etc. If you don't see a VPN adapter in the drop-down, go to Windows setup and add Virtual Private Networking in the Communications tab.

Sounds counter-intuitive, but you're "dialing" a connection even though it's over cable or DSL

Thank you both very much for your assistance. It's been a big help.

One more question if I may. As I try to map a network drive, Windows ME shows a "resource name" (which makes no sense to me) and asks for a username, all in the same popup. No password works here.

I've been told it's because Windows is assigning me a username by itself. I would have to set up a login on my home PC to circumvent the problem. Sounds like a hassle.

Is there an easier way?

I did not know the answer to your query, but enlisted the aid of a friend and his reply is as follows...hope it helps

If you try to map a drive that resides at work, you may need to use the domain name for authorization. For example, if you typically log in to Outlook or onto the network when at work with a domain of "Work," a user name of "breeze1" and password, try "Work/breeze1" as the user name. Use your normal password.

cancel past the logon when you boot up instead of entering a password or just hitting ok, because you have a nic card you should be getting some sort of network logon, win9x/me does not have the requirement of being added to the domain to gain full access to which win2000x/xpx does.
