Lots of detail follows,
I have tried much of the stuff I found by Googling, except the 'remove everything in the system partition, to make more space' suggestion, It currently has 72 Megs free (out of 100 Meg)
System restore is set to use 2Gigs max, all previous restore points are deleted.

This in the event log:-
Administrative events
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80004005: Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932).

Application Log;

1. Successfully created restore point (Process = C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs; Description = Windows Update).

This one sort of suggests the insufficient system drive space tack?

Yo
It worked!!!
Now just have to put everything back how it was. Doh
and install the 49 (to start with) newer updates via windows update..
Keep watching to see if this causes any problems.

So far so good. Good point to say thanks for all those who made suggestions.
But now I guess we will never know the reason for this!
