Lots of detail follows,
I have tried much of the stuff I found by Googling, except the 'remove everything in the system partition, to make more space' suggestion, It currently has 72 Megs free (out of 100 Meg)
System restore is set to use 2Gigs max, all previous restore points are deleted.

This in the event log:-
Administrative events
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80004005: Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932).

Application Log;

1. Successfully created restore point (Process = C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs; Description = Windows Update).

This one sort of suggests the insufficient system drive space tack?

The system reserved partion is it marked as active when you look at it in disk management?
What version of windows 7 is it?

Ben. Its not a laptop.
Acer 5910 Tower system.

It has an Intel core i5 CPU, I dont know if this is where you are going but I had thought about this, the latest 5910's have an AMD Chip.
1T Drive 6Gig RAM.
Running Windows 7 Home Premium.

and yes the system reserved partition is active.

Ok, then I guess it is not a problem with the Intel MicroCode...;)

so have you attempted to install the SP with a CLEAN BOOT (see Linney's post as to link), thus non Microsoft programs are out of the picture?

also have you checked the install log?

maybe, this is of help:

Windows Update Troubleshooter v1.2

woohoo!!!! lots of text to scan through... ;-)

the way it looks is that something is corrupted, possible in the already installed Updates/hotfixes...

have a read as to possible solutions:

Solution: Windows 7 SP1 fails with error code 0×80004005

a lot of stuff I've read in the past couple of days, more or less point to an Inplace-Upgrade as the most promising solution...

but do attempt to run the Update-Readiness-Tool first...

in the end you probably will not get around to installing SP1, as future updates/hotfixes will require that it is installed...

Ben the steps on the blog site didn't work, don't even seem to fit whats on my machine the service name is wrong to start with.

Anyway I moved all the stuff from the distribution folder, but wasn't offered all the updates, didn't update just hung after restarting the service.
Had to do a restart then it just offered the Service pack (and KB978610 that I had uninstalled)
All that does is remove the Cached copies of the downloads, doesn't actually remove any updates.
Still didn't install the service pack! and I have now lost (even though I put the folders back) the update list from Windows update.

Correct, but it should have given you more updates than those two you mentioned... allowing you to OVER install them... but since it did nothing but cause a bit of a fit, and you got it back without much hassle, I am glad and a bit perplexed...

Hmmm... looks like either a full install (with SP1 slipstreamed) or an Inplace-Upgrade... what ever you decide, make sure that you make a copy (image) of the drive before hand...

on setting it up, I used the acer utility to create 4 DVD's.
3 contain a backup of the initial state of the computer.
You can opt to restore. Just the OS or everything.
The 4th DVD is a backup the drivers

But you don't actually get an OS disk, So I expect this will make it difficult to produce a slipstream disk.

You dont have Windows Mail installed by any chance (not to be confused with windows live mail)?

Weeelll, I did try to install it by transferring some stuff from a Vista Install, it didn't work and I am using Live mail now.
Have you found a connection?

Steve: N.M.N.F.

Supposedly transferring the files needed to use windows mail from Vista can cause the issue.
It appears MSOE.dll in the windows Mail folder if its the Vista version can cause the issue.

It certainly was! I had a go at restoring it and making sure that the owner is 'trusted installer', but that diddnt work.
What if I delete it altogether?

Steve: N.M.N.F.

I am not sure you can remove it because its owned by trusted installer, unless you take ownership of that folder.
You can try renaming the files to .old and then run SFC /SCANNOW

Ok I wasn't sure which files in the windows mail folders might be wrong so I renamed both folders (x86 and 64) then ran sfc.
The cbs log shows that both windows mail folders have been re-created (and they have).
Not sure if I need to delete the re-named folders I will have to 'take ownership' for that, didn't have to, to do the rename, just followed the elevation prompts.
Trying the install again !!

Nope didn't work.

Any Anti virus/security installed? If so can you try uninstalling them? The worst part can be after doing a bunch of stuff to fix the problem could eventually lead to a worse problem. If you know someone with a windows 7 home premium disk you could borrow it and try the repair.

Already tried with the AV/Firewall (McAfee trial) disabled.

Next thing is to try the Acer recovery discs.

Steve: N.M.N.F.

The recovery disks will quite likely wipe and reinstall totally i would suggest backing up any thing you need to keep first.

OK bit the bullet and used the Acer system restore to restore the Operating system.

When I ran windows update, there are 80(2) unpdates offered but not SP1.

So I have opted to attempt to install SP1 from the install disk image that I downloaded.

Its running the install now, watch this space?
