Hello,
I have been having some issues connecting to the 11C cabinet via serial.

I have my comm software setup to match SSC baud rate, with 8/N/1 config, my issue is:

I can see some of the error codes and AUD codes appear in my terminal, but when I press enter numerously to get a logon prompt I get nothing.

I have made a new cable as follows per instructions I noted on this site:

9Pin - 9Pin (female-female ends so connecting to male end of PC and male 9pin on cabinet)

Pin 2 - Pin 3
Pin 3 - Pin 2
Pin 5 - Pin 5

Is there something I have missed in the wiring of this simple cable?

And if it was option to shoot to my local source, walmart or computer store to pickup a new 9pin cable I would however I am remote and no options to pickup a local cable where I am.

Thanks.

Sounds like you might need another pair of eyes to look at this. It's rare that Procomm would not connect to any device, unless the comm settings are wrong. Com port, speed settings, something... Keep looking, or make the call.

What are the assigned users of the TTY port you are trying to connect to?

If MTC is not turned on at the user prompt, you will not be able to log into that port.

We seem to be having a similar issue that is stumping us.

We have a Nortel Option 11c that we have had for 10 years. We normall access it via HyperTerminal and have done so just fine until today. Now we get nothing. We've checked all cables, settings, etc. We have even tried other PCs and even a laptop running Fedora core 12 and used minicom as described above. Nothing.

We are using the serial port 0 at 9600-8-N-1.

We have re-booted the switch and nothing.

Anyone have any ideas???

Ok, the problem seems to be something with the backplane. We have a second cabinet and when we took the SCC card out of the production cabinet and stuck it into the spare, we could connect into it. When we put the card back into the production cabinet (and using the cables from the spare) we were still not able to get into the system.

We will be swapping all cards from the production cabinet into the spare one later this afternoon.

yep sounds as if you ssc is knackered I have changed many ssc cards with this problem . Usually caused by lightning

The SSC seems to be fine (it worked in the second cabinet), just the backplane seems to have a problem as odd as that seems.

Ok, problem resolved. After moving all cards to a spare cabinet, the system powered up but the cards would not enable.

So we put them all back into the original cabinet. After the cards were pulled out of the spare cabinet we discovered that slots 3 and 10 had bent pins on the backplane. That cabinet hasn't been used for 8 years so who knows when it happend.

With all of the cards back in the original cabinet everything powered up and we were able to establish termnal access again. The only thing different was we had pulled the Ethernet MAT cable off. With the cable in place (tho not connected to anything), no access with a terminal. Without the cable, everthing works fine. Weird. This cable has been in place for the last 10 years. Why it has an effect now, who knows.

Maybe this will be of some help to someone with a problem in the future.

Is the Ethernet adapter on the end of that cable? That is one of the most common failure points that Nortel ever had, and never put out a bulletin on. That adapter just up and died. The reason they didn't, was because it was NOT a Nortel product, and couldn't disparage the company making them. I have 6 in the junk box. The first one almost killed me. I changed everything twice. When I replace the cabinet, I forgot to replace the cable. When I plugged it in, wham. It died. Ah so! I made notes to myself! Next one, same thing. I changed everything again. Stupid me! The next day, "oh yeah"!
Lemetrythat. The third time... Done in 60 seconds. Anyway...
Happy Holidays everyone!

Thanks for the info DocVic! Yes, the transceiver was attached to the cable (tho not plugged into the network). I guess after 10 years, it gave up and died.

Can you dial via the maintenance modem? If so - LD 37 -> STAT TTY - see if your maintenance port is enabled or not. If not - ENL TTY XX (XX = the port #). See if that does the trick.
