Hello,
I have been having some issues connecting to the 11C cabinet via serial.

I have my comm software setup to match SSC baud rate, with 8/N/1 config, my issue is:

I can see some of the error codes and AUD codes appear in my terminal, but when I press enter numerously to get a logon prompt I get nothing.

I have made a new cable as follows per instructions I noted on this site:

9Pin - 9Pin (female-female ends so connecting to male end of PC and male 9pin on cabinet)

Pin 2 - Pin 3
Pin 3 - Pin 2
Pin 5 - Pin 5

Is there something I have missed in the wiring of this simple cable?

And if it was option to shoot to my local source, walmart or computer store to pickup a new 9pin cable I would however I am remote and no options to pickup a local cable where I am.

Thanks.

Additional:
Did a reset with serial connected this is what appears in HyperTerm:

AUD000
03 00AF LOAD 64 0 5 2 0 0 0 1824 00 0000
>
XMI002 2 XDLC
XMI002 9 XUT

I have tried to type LOGI and no responce.

Hi,
Yes null modem has been used (tried cable and an adapter)
TTY 0 is being used.

Tried with caps on, I don't even get the ">" prompt it appears then goes to err200 code and won't come back or return even after hitting return.

So, your N 8 1 is set. What is the speed switch set to on the face of the SSC and what are you set for? Are you connected to the Port 0 cable?

Hi,
Yes 8 N 1 no flow control.
SSC is at 9600 as is my terminal tried dropping down to 1200 also with no change.

I am connected to the 9 pin male port from the cabinet that sits in the upper left not the port where the octopus cable would connect.
This is the port that has always been used/active.

I tried to initiate software setup though I didn't see the prompt by pressing ctrl+i during a boot and still nothing.

Thanks.

I suspect you got your pinouts from this: thread798-1526566

Using the Male 9-Pin connector from the Option 11 cabinet

OPT11 ~~ PC Serial Port
2 ~~ 3
3 ~~ 2
5 ~~ 5

I also noticed one poster said "don't forget the null modem adapter". Have you tried that part?

Hi Guys,
Thats how shes been wired 2 ~~ 3, 3 ~~ 2, 5 ~~ 5, with and without null adapter.

However, after looking at the paddle board PIN outs for the cabinet, Pin 5 is not used, Pin 2 is TX, Pin 3 GND, and Pin 6 RX, so to create a null modem 9pin - 9pin would I not cross Pins 2/6 and pass pin 3 through for GND?

Thanks.

No Change...

Tried wiring 2 -> 6
6 -> 2
3 -> 3

So TX -> RX
RX -> TX
GND -> GND

No change.

Im just wondering, has anyone actually seen a computer (PC) console connected to an 11C cabinet to the cabinets 9 Pin male connector (so 9pin female - 9pin female cable) using just the 3 wires 2/3, 3/2, 5/5?

I have wired new cables, tried existing cables, and as you can see tried every option with no luck.

I attacked the octopus cable output where the 3 tty ports sit, there is 24 wires, therfore each tty is using 8 wires, I coulded up 1....whatever the last wire sat on and took them 8 wires aside and also no luck wiring it in anyway, can anyone confirm how the 3-port tty output gets wired? is port 1 (or 0) of the output from that wires 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 (example) in the amphenol end?

We use a RS-232 "smart" cable. We get them from Mike Sandman. He has all kinds of cool stuff for telecom. Using this smart cable, we can connect to almost any device by flipping the switch till the lights come on. The 75 bucks for the cable saves us hours of wasted time playing. We then use a LED box to figure out the wiring, then make up a cable. It's worth it.

You might want to take a look at this site too.

Use Procomm instead of Hyperterminal. We have 2 opt 11C's that will not allow us in using Hyperterminal but will with Procomm. We have 10 other Opt 11's that all work fine with Hyperterminal. Have not really troubleshot it to figure out why, we just know this option works.

I agree with the last two comments. Use a clever or smart cable (9 way to 25 way) as these devices will as stated above save you hours of trying different connections, Null modems etc.

Also TTY 0 is easier to use as the pin outs will be different for TTY 1 and 2 etc.

Well.....

I remember why I dislike computers, phones and telecom in general but have stuck with it for so long.

I took the advice, ProComm seen carrier detect (CD) no issues, but only garbage on screen, checked baud rate, etc. No change.

Tried alternate cable, same issue.

So I disconnected from the PC I was on, connected to a laptop that runs Ubuntu with a serial program (minicom) did a direct connect VT100, 9600, 8, N, 1, boom, hit enter typed LOGI got my PASS prompt.

Now go back to HyperTerm and ProComm on the other PC... Same issue. So first thing that pops to mind is defective Serial port or bad settings? Could be, without changing a thing, I fired up a UBuntu CD, it allows you to "run" the OS without changing/installing, fired up the minicom app, connects to the cabinet no issue.

Needless to say I'm stumped :) Too many years not enough explanation :)

Any thoughts anyone?
Also, anyone know where I can track down MAT Tools?

Thank you all for the help and assistance, I owe you all coffee :)

Cancel the track down MAT Tools, dongle and a CD was in my laptop bag. (See = I'm too old for this) :)

Last year I had an issue on my laptop where I could see output, but couldn't transmit. I also had a USB to serial port cable that worked fine, so I was lucky in that it was easy to convince the IT boys that the laptop's serial port was faulty!.
