hello all,

i have a rather simple, three table database with three users, running on a novell network. the only reason i mention the network is that this may be a network error rather than an access error.

at unpredictable intervals, when users save a record they get a series of three error dialogs which read; (1) "could not save. currently locked by user 'Admin' on machine X.", followed by (2) "the save operation failed.", and (3)"out of memory." BUT the database has plenty of memory (it is under 1 meg and contains less than 1000 records) and will in fact save the record.

can anyone tell me how to avoid these dialogs? both embarassing and annoying.....

thanks,

ap

Just a thought, doublecheck your default open mode and your default record locking under tools, options. Whose permissions are you running under (tables/queries tab). And I hate to say something so obvious (I don't want to be insulting) but have you checked the user permissions?

I have been fighting this issue on a novell network as well.
only happens on a split database. I still have not found the idea solution. I only get various lock by user admin messages have not received the out of memory error. I am 100% sure it is stricly a novell issue but can't get it solved.

MD (and all- please help!),

i appreciate your post...my problem may indeed be something rather obvious. but, the user/group permissions are appropriate. (check) default openmode is shared, default run permissions are the user's, and record locking is set to no locks. (check, check and...check)

and oh yes- the 'sharable' box is checked in the novell netware info tab in the file's properties.

other ideas?

thanks,

ap

thanks. i thought it must be a network issue as the database itself is very small, very simple, very young, and has very few records.

my only other thought is that one of the users may have a small utility program (screen saver, desktop...) that interferes with access/novell somehow...

anyone else know something we don't?

thanks all,

ap

I am having precisely the same problem with my Access97 database - which is rather complicated, with lots of underlying VBA, and running on a network with 4 users using a Windows 2000 server. Here's what I get: "OUT OF MEMORY", following by "THE SAVE OPERATION FAILED", then "COULDN'T SAVE; CURRENTLY LOCKED BY USER ADMIN ON MACHINE _____". Like you, I have checked and double-checked many things (No Locks set, etc.), including making sure that all my recordsets are closed in VBA (another suggestion), and nothing's worked!

I'm beginning to think it's Access 97 - is that the version of Access that you are running?

If you've learned anything since this posting, I'd appreciate learning about it! Thanks -

Lisa
