Howdy all.
I'm currently running a RedHat 9 server on a Dell Workstation 400 (Dell mobo, dual P2 300Mhz, 512 meg ram, 80 gig & 20 gig hds, Matrox Millennium(non AGP), on board & 1 pci nic). I have a machine I built last year (ABIT TH7-Raid mobo(not going to use the raid at this time), P4 1.7 Ghz, 1.25 Gig ram, no hard drives, TNT 2 AGP, 1 pci nic) that I want to move the server to.
What I would like to do, if possible, is just move the hard drives and the 1 nic from the old to new machine.
My question -- Will RH handle that? If not, how much work will be entailed? What pitfalls can I look forward to?

The move should be just as you said, just move the hard drive and NIC and you should be good to go. Just make sure the process Kudzu is running as it is responisble for looking for new hardware during the startup processes. Other than that it should work. The processor and memory change is handled by the BIOS so no worries there.

Thanks Burke. Yes Kudzu is running. As soon as I update my backup of the server I'll do the move.

HELP...

I started to do the upgrade from an older machine to a newer one.

History: Originally there was only a 20 gig drive with RH 8. I got an 80 gig drive, put it in by its self and installed RH 9. I then added back the 20 gig hard drive to move the Home directory to the 80 gig drive. I had to play (and I use the word play because I'm still a newbie at this) with the fstab file to get it to boot. I basically renamed things to point where they needed to be. Because I didn't need RH 8, deleted everything on the 20 gig but never got around to changing the partitions.

Now to my STUPID part then I NEED help with.

As I was moving the hard drives and nic I decided that I didn't need the 20 gig drive and would keep it in the old machine. I booted up and the system halts at File System Check and asks for the root password to fix it or Ctrl-D to continue. Well I went in and tried to edit fstab to put it back to the way it should be with the one hard
drive. I made a back up of it first. I figured if I couldn't figure it out I could always change it back and put the 20 gig back in. Well my changes were wrong. Still stops at the same spot. But NOW the file system is Read-Only. I can't cp back the fstab backup so I can do plan B. So I put the 20 gig in to see if that help. Nope - worse. Now it stops on GRUB. I let it be for approx 15 minutes but the screen never changes. I powered down and removed the 20 gig and it does like it did before - stops at File System Check.

Any suggestions?

Log back in an run "ef2fsck -pv /dev/hda1". You may need to change hda1 to whichever device is causing the problem.

That will work even though the system comes up as Read-Only?
