Any tips on getting hired for a company you've worked for before? I left this company in good standing after being employed with them for a year. Now they have several openings I'm interested in. I left because of the pay and type of work in the department I was in but these new positions are in a different department and offer better compensation. I still have a few contacts over there that I'll get in touch with. I'd like to hear anyone's advice on what to or not to put in my cover letter and how I can use my knowledge of the company to my advantage in getting hired.

Is this an American company or a European one?

It's been my experience that American companies are glad to re-hire you, as long as you left on good terms. because you're a known quantity, and are more familiar with their business than a perfect stranger would be.

European companies, OTOH, once you leave them, tend not to rehire you. It's sort of like the Mafia -- you become dead to them, capish?

Good to know. Fortunately it's an American company and I did leave on good terms.

I returned to a former (European) employer after redundancy after 6 months (another employee was going on a round the world trip) at their request.
As Chiph says, they know you, you know them, their products, services and depending upon the post you used to occupy, maybe clients as well.

Disadvantages are when you come to move on again, your CV/Resume says CompanyX YearA-YearB, CompanyY YearB-YearC, CompanyX YearC-YearD - and virtually everybody wants to know why I returned to the same company after leaving.

I left a company of 5 years because of a bad boss and compensation. I went to work for a much smaller company that I was familiar with and they treated me very well. 3 months later my ex boss had been fired and a guy I knew replaced him. I was offered my old job back with better pay and more responsibility.

I felt bad because the other company is now a vendor for me and it's somewhat awkward. I also didn't want them to think I used them to get more $$ because that wasn't the case. I believe things happen for a reason and I'm very happy now.

It Depends"...

Some companies have a negative attitude towards people who quit... others are just looking at the bottom line... still others want to "keep their family together"...

That's one thing I'm afraid of. But hopefully they'll see that I quit because I got a better opportunity. Also I was doing programming of a sort there and now I'm a network admin, so it was kind of a career change as well.
