I have a production 3300 MXe running 8.0.9.20. I just bought an older 3300 MX secondhand for testing/learning purposes for myself. This unit came with 9.0.3.15 installed on it. Can I backup the configuration on the MXe and restore it to the MX, or will this cause problems? If it isn't possible, what's the best way to configure the older MX as closely as possible to the existing MXe?

Thanks,
Bryan

A backup and restore should be fine. You can go the other way so I don't see why not. Just make sure you have enough licenses etc for what you are trying to restore (I.e its no good trying to restore 200 IP set DB if your MX is only licensed for 50).

Before you do it make sure the IP addresses of the MX are set the same as the ones you used on the MXe. Otherwise any forms dealing with IP's like IP trunks or clustering could have issues.

Well, in terms of IP sets, the MXe is licensed for 33 sets, the MX for 31. There is a big difference in VM licenses though, the MXe is licensed for 81, the MX for 12. I don't really care if all the sets or mailboxes are restored on the MX as it's really just for personal learning/testing. Will the restore just truncate certain sets/mailboxes, or will it fail?

There is a migration path from the MX to the MXe but not the other way. That being said, I'm sure it can be done but you have to do a couple of things first.

You MUST remove all analog devices programmed on the embedded main or option board from the MXe before creating the backup. This includes removing the AMB/AOB from programming. Not doing so will certainly cause corruption on the MX when the DB is restored and the boards are not of the same type.

Additionally, you MUST have the same IP address programmed on the MX as on the MXe before restoring.

If the MXe has an expansion processor, any programming relating to it must be removed as well.

If the MXe has any Modules installed in slots 5 or 6, it might be prudent to remove them (not sure if its necessary but who knows.)

Personally, I would forget about all of the above and use a methodical Export form from MXe and Import form to MX. This will give you full control of what elements get copied and which do not and it will also immediately give you feedback if something is wrong with the programming in any particular form.

Back to the origianl post although you can transfer the MXE to the MX its not that big of a deal to just start from scratch or even try the configuration wizard. That way you can avoid any potential issues plus if the MX is to learn on what better way to do it. You are not going to learn much transfering a database unless of course you did the MXe programming in the first place. With a few import/exports you can bang out a MX in a fairly short time.

In the end I decided not even to export/import, and manually configure from scratch. I don't know much about the 3300 beyond setting up extensions and mailboxes, so this is the best way for me to learn, like you mentioned. Thanks to everyone who responded for the tips.
