Trying to restore a file from a tape. when I go to restore it give me options of 7/22 and 7/25 I need to get a file from a tape on 7/23 I just want to restore a file from a tape. Is there anyway to do this? Please help.
Thanks
Tom

Hi Tom,

I'm pretty sure that if you stick the tape in the drive and run a catalog of it, it'll then show up.

hope that helps
Josh

It looks like:

1. there wasn't a backup done on 7/23
2. the 7/23 backup is actually on a different tape.

If it's #1, you're out of luck.

Can you check your other tapes to see if 7/23's backup is on one of them?

Look in your job history and see if there really is a backup job that was done on 7/23, if so, check the job history which will show you the tape(s) it used.

Thanks guys. A coworker just went over and got it. HE will let me know what happened and I will post it up.

Thanks again

I have almost the same problem. When I tried to search for file to restore it, I cannot find it but I am sure that the file is on one of our 50 backup tapes. All settings are correct. PLEASE HELP!!!

Background: Backup Exec 6.11, Windows NT Server(standalone).

enkhp,

Are you using an autoloader/tape library? If so, CATALOG all the tapes (this will take quite some time). Then look in the RESTORE tab list and find the file you need to restore. If it's not there, it's not on the tapes.

I catalog(full, not partial) all the tapes already. When I try to search for a file using the search tool, it will not find the file. However if I will manually find the same file using the catalog and select the file then I could restore. One thing I noticed that if the file is under a white folder, it can't find it using search tool. It takes time to finnd a file on 50 tapes that is why I like to use the search tool. Please let me know what you think.

I got this from veritas.

I hope it helps. Took them 6 days to get back to me.

Thanks again everyone!

To restore a specific file from the media, perform the following steps:

1. Open Backup Exec application and go to the "Restore Selections" tab.

Note: If you are unable to see the restore options for the particular date,
then perform inventory and catalog on the media that contains the backup
set.

2. Drill down to the specific file from the restore media set and select
the data that needs to be restored.

3. Run the restore job and observe the results.

If the issue still persists, then kindly revert back with the following
information:

1. Screen shot showing the restore selections for the date 7/23
in "Restore Selections" tab in .jpg format

2. Event logs (application and system event log in .evt format)

3. BEDIAG.FAX file run on Backup Exec Media Server
How to create BEDIAG.FAX please refer the following technote

4. SGMON Log
How to create SGMON.LOG please refer the following technote
Note: Start sgmon before starting the Backup Exec/backup/restore
operation.

5.System Information file (for Windows 2000)
Select My Computer---> Right Click ---> Manage ---> Select System
Information ---> Save As (.txt and .nfo)

Or,

5. Microsoft Diagnostic File (for Windows NT)
Run Winmsd.exe ---> File ---> Save ---> msdrpt.txt

Note: Please send the requested information in a single zip file.

enkhp,

are you looking for a specific file or a specific file from a specific date?

In other words:

Are you looking for File A
or
Are you looking for File A from 7/31/03?

Veritas lists backups by the day they were done. You can look in Job Monitor tab to see when you ran the backup and then look for that date/time in the Restore tab and then find the file.

Thank you, SQLBill.

The file was probbably not backed up or it is on the two bad tapes we have.

Thank you all for your help!

This information is way late, but may help someone else.

To catalog the ENTIRE tape regardless of catalog information already stored on-line or on the tape...

Go to Tools, Options, Catalogs, and clear the "Use Storage Media-based catalogs" check mark. This allows the entire tape to be scanned for files, block by block.

The tradeoff is, of course, that it takes a long time to scan an entire tape.
