I need a little guidance...

I currently have a Windows 2003 DC (that also handles DHCP/DNS/WINS/Print) that I want to replace with a new Windows 2008 server.

I've found instructions on how to migrate all of the services over to the new server. The new server will have a new name but I'd like to use the same IP as the old server.

My question is, in what order should I do all this? Should I add the new server to the domain first and make it a DC? (I do know that I need to prep the forest for the first 2008 DC) Or should I migrate over DHCP/DNS/ETC before that? When would I 'transfer' over the static IP from the old server? Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You need to migrate everything over, decommission the old server, then change the IP address on the new server.

Add the 2008 server to the domain
Update your schema
promote the 2008 server
make it a GC
install DNS
install DHCP - move the scope over using export/import
migrate printers
transfer the FSMO roles
If you must still use WINS, move that
turn off GC on old server
demote old server
remove old server from domain
turn off old server
reset IP address on new server

That's a quick list. Lots more in the 2003 forum on replacing DCs.

Plan for performance, and capacity takes care of itself. Plan for capacity, and suffer poor performance.

I've come up with one problem after doing this.

It appears that I can still ping the server using it's old name. Now both the old and new name ping to the same IP. Where can I get rid of the old hostname? I've looked in DNS.. should I also look in the WINs settings?

On your computer drop to a command prompt and type "ipconfig/flushdns", then try it again.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

There are no more PDC's! There are DC's with FSMO roles!

If all clients can still ping the old server via name, then it's either in your DNS or your WINS.

I was able to find the listing for the old server name in WINs. Can I just delete it? Will deleting it affect the other server that has the same IP?

When I delete it.. I'm assuming I want to select:

"Replicate deletion of the record to other servers (tombstone)"

Is that right?

I think I got it... now when I try to ping it comes back and says:

Ping request could not find host...

Thanks!

When you change the IP address of the new server, you're likely to run into some problems with DHCP. If you're passing out DNS server addresses via DHCP, you'll need to update the scope options with the new IP address.
