Hello,

I just switched out a kitchen printer with another used printer that the manager of the restaurant purchased via ebay. The printer is in good condition and powers up normally. Upon plugging in the printer, it began to print illegible characters non stop. When the cat5 cable was unplugged, it stopped but then proceeded as the cable was plugged in again. In the interim of not having a kitchen printer, they had placed the Bar (thermal) printer in its place. It seemed to work fine and I am told, that was just a plug and play operation. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get this Epson U220D. It is the same model that was there before (prior to the thermal). The printer is connected via a serial adapter to a cat5 cable, as are all other printers in the restaurant.
In aloha manager it is setup as such:

Name: KP1
Terminal: 000 None
Port: COM6
Type: Epson U200

When the printer was first plugged in, it was set to a Epson TM80. I checked settings for another kitchen printer (KP2) that was installed, as they used two printers simultaneously in the past. They tell me that it was also an Epson U220D, but Aloha settings are still set to Epson 300 for KP2. I tried refreshing the system under those settings as well and had no luck. As I've refreshed under different settings, the printer stopped printing random characters. I've re-routed the printers via FOH to the bar printer (physically in the bar) meanwhile. Is there another step in installing one of these printers that I am missing? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Michael

power off the printer, open the door on the bottom of the printer and match the dip switch settings to the old printer (or some other printer that's the exact same model), after changing dip switches (look carefully they are tough to see) power the printer back on and test. You can also self test an epson printer by holding down the line feed button when powering on, it'll print set up stuff, press line feed again and it will print 2' of characters then stop printing. A self test is the best way to establish if the printer is working OK w/o being connected to the POS system.

The correct pinout for the U200 is as follows
Bank 1 3,5,6,7 all on everything else off
Bank 2 just turn on 2.

This is based on the printer being a serial interface printer

TobeThor,
Thank you for the reply. I did as you said and changed the dip switch settings to match the other printer. They were definitely different. Anyway, I also ran the self test as you instructed. Within that test, there is a section which says:

Memory switch 2
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
ON
OFF X X X X X X X X

Memory switch 8
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
ON
OFF X X X X X X X X

These look like the switches I just adjusted. Does this mean that they are all off? I did match the other printer which has many switches turned on and I carefully pushed each one up until it could go no further. It is still not printing tickets. Am I correct to have the printer as type: Epson U200 in the Aloha Manager?

Your help is very appreciated.

In gratitude,

Michael

Still cannot get this working. Anything else I may be missing?

AlohaRoss, it is a serial printer, however it has an adapter to cat5 cable. Does that make a difference?

Thank you,

Michael

I just reread your original post? Have you ever changed the setting for which terminal it is connected too.

Name: KP1
Terminal: 000 None You need to have a terminal assigned here if its not Opos
Port: COM6
Type: Epson U200

AlohaRoss,

Now that you mention it... I think the terminal WAS changed. I recall seeing terminal 3 the first day I came. I think the manager may have moved it. Along those same lines, how would I know if it is on the correct port? It is possible they may have messed with the port as well.

I've selected a terminal, but still cannot print.

I really appreciate the help guys.

Michael
