I need help. I have Windows98. I loaded a couple of Applications, which show up as Icons on my startup menu (taskbar in the bottom). I dont want these applications to come up when I boot up my pc. I tried to remove them from the startup menu but they still keep coming up when I boot up my pc, which is annoying and delays the booting process. Please suggest a way so that I can remove them from the startup menu completely (and keep them under my control, that is unless I go to Start>Programs> and select my Application, it should NOT start on its own). Thanks in advance.

Go to Start>>Run and type msconfig and hit enter.
Click the Startup tab and uncheck those applications.

Also, sometimes you can right-click the icon in the system tray (in taskbar) and go to Options or Preferences and disable startup. That is application specific but doing that is better then msconfig if possible.

yes most of these type of programs usually have an option to load or not load at windows startup...if you uncheck in msconfig and the app is being told to load with windows it will just recreate a startup in msconfig

Thank you very much guys. I will try that and let you all know if it did the trick. - Kris

If you have multiple entries in MSConfig which you want to get rid of, have a look at the EXE version of this app:

It lets you remove entries from the startup either by disabling or deleting them. I found it useful for when a workstation has about three entries for some stupid program.
