I could be wrong but I don't think you can remove the Start Menu from Win98 and actually be able to use the computer in a familiar way. The Start Menu is an integral feature of Explorer.

It's fairly easy to "disable" the Start Menu by removing all of it's functions (Folders, Log Off, My Documents, Find, Help, etc). This could be performed through the registry but it would be a rather risky undertaking.

Probably the easiest way to do this would be to edit System.ini. Find the "[Boot]" section and change the Shell line from [tt]Shell = Explorer.exe[/tt] to [tt]Shell = Progman.exe[/tt]. This should eliminate the Start Menu.

It will also have the unfortunate side effect of transporting you several years into the past. You will feel like you are running Windows 3.x (actually, for all intents and purposes, you will be. No offense Mr. Gates. What have you actually done for us in the last ten years?)
